It's hard to buy big suckers around here so two years ago I decided I would try to catch my own. I bummed a long cane pole from a local oldster and using waders I hit a local river and slowly waded, dropping the bait in front of suckers I could see sitting on the bottom. Success!!!, or so I thought, when I caught two about 12-15" long. Right on! Into the areated cooler and the next day I'm dragging one around on a quick-strike rig, the other in an areated cooler in the boat.

But, after some hours there's no interest from the muskies and so I'm back at the landing, unhooking the almost-dead sucker from the qs rig. I threw it to the side of the landing and because I couldn't fish the next day I threw the other, live sucker, next to the beat up guy.

A serious muskie guy pulls into the landing is watching me do all this and he walks over to peer down at the suckers I've tossed on the ground. He says, "You using these for bait out here, fishing for muskies?" I respond with a "Yep!" and proudly describe that I caught them myself just the day before. He's looking at me kinda funny and responds, "Mister, these are not suckers." Whaaaa???? He then adds, speaking slowly because he's concluded I'm a real dope, "You don't want to get caught by the DNR fishing with carp that you brought over from some river."

Yep, they were young carp, not suckers. Oh, for dumb.
