My friend was fishing there today and said something about the city redoing the launch or something and that it will be shut down for a month :| Has anyone else heard about this or is it complete nonsense?

I was there on Tuesday and they were busting up the curbs in the lot, no parking was allowed but you could still launch and park on the street. Searching around online, it appears they are re-surfacing the lot. I emailed a couple of people for details, I'll post any information I get.

I was at the launch today, the barricade says the lot will be closed starting Oct 5. Signs were posted saying you could not park in the lot, but the lot was full

Musky fishing on this lake will be more of a challenge this fall.
According to the city of Madison's Parks Department the parking lot and launch at Knickerbocker will be closed for about a month beginning Oct. 5. It's all weather dependent, of course. So pray for dry weather.

There is a boat launch at Vilas park but it is narrow and shallow and has no pier, but will have to do.

The guy I spoke to at parks said it was a tough call and they new that this is a prime time for musky fishing but there were others to consider as well. If they would have closed the ramp in the spring or summer, it would have killed the canoe and kayak rental business located at the ramp. They also honored a request from the nearby Jewish Temple to keep the lot open until after Rosh Hashanah, which was Sept. 19.

I understand the city's decision but it still stinks, especially for those (not me) who have bigger boats. The city said that the long term plan would be to eventually improve the Vilas ramp, when they improve that whole thoroughfare through Vilas park, but that could be years away.

The good news is we still have access to the lake, and we can also fish other nearby musky lakes like Monona and Waubesa.

I know it stinks they picked this time of year to redo the parking lot and launch, but it has to be done. Anyone know if they plan to add any boat trailer parking? or, are they just repaving the existing lot the same way. That lot desperately needs some trailer-only parking spaces.

As for the launch in Vilas Park. I have used it before. It works, but I have a word of caution for those with larger boats. This is an extremely shallow launch, maybe 1 1/2 ft or so. As was stated above bigger boats might want to consider the other lakes in town. I fish out of a 14' semi-vee jon boat. I still had to push it off my trailer at the Vilas Launch. If you have rollers it might still work with a bigger boat but it's still really shallow. Also there is no hole to power load and no dock as said above.

you would think they could have picked April to do it as the fishing season isn't open ...?? just a thought.
kind of a bummer as Oct can be a great month to take guys who haven't boated many fish to the lake to get some good topwater and sucker action.....grrrrr

Yeah it's going to suck for matchfishing playoffs too especially with all the tournaments coming up on the Madison chain...:( Oh well there's another similar lake it's just a longer drive.
