I wanted to try balancing my rods, but found that the ones from BPS did not fit over my fat cork grips. Then I wanted to balance the rods without altering how they were built. I did it two different ways and both worked well. I had an epiphany. I have a lot of lead sinkers and solder lying around, could I use that? Yes!

For a shorter rod that needed less weight, I put some large heat shrink tubing over the rear few inches of cork. Then I wrapped solder around the rod until balanced. Put another piece of heat shrink over it and done.

For a longer rod that needed a lot of weight, I tried the same thing, but it looked bad. So I got out the drill bits and drilled a hole in a 4X4 the diameter of the cork. Melted the amount of lead needed to balance the rod and poured it into the hole. Let it set up, put a dab of hot glue on the lead slug and stuck it to the but of the rod. Heat shrink tube over that and done.

I think they look pretty darn good.

Hadn't thought about that, you are right. Guess my boat partners better not get sassy, or WHACK.

I found the heat shrink at frye electronics. Any place that sells electrical components should have it. I paid $10 for 4 feet of it.
