OK, I'm in MN at the Parent's house and fishing nice, classic muskie water with structure and all the cool stuff that Lake St. Clair doesn't have. (Jonesi knows the place....) The cabbage is browning, but some does remain green. But during this time, as a general rule, where should I look? Are they going to be structure and rock oriented this time of year? I know fall is a good time to look at rocks, but is it close enough to "fall" in the muskie's world yet? Water temps are still pretty warm. (LSC I have weeds until November and the name of the game is "weeds.") Or will they be tucked in the cabbage as long as they can be? What about going deep? This lake has several deep areas, are they worth prospecting with a Pounder this time of year?

Just a nudge in the right direction please. Hell, I haven't fished muskie structure since I fished this lake last summer.

Steve, if you get a chance between jobs, gimme a call and point me in the right direction. I called last week, but I know you're a busy man and I don't want to be botherin' ya.

I know what you mean. Ever since I got into this sport the cabbage is coming to the end, but still manage to have a few bucks for a trip and a bait now and again.

I move to the weed edge and see if there is some Coontail growing there. It usually is. The 2 seem to grow together. If some are green, they are still putting out oxygen and will hold bait. My first move is to the weed edge, then to the closest break.

Keep fishing your good spots where weeds are the cherry, not the whole sundae. Ie: big shoals, narrows, whatever. I will take dying, crummy weeds on a primo spot over lush weeds in dead water 100 times out of 100! A good fish won't leave a prime piece of structure or stop visiting it just because the weeds on it are in bad shape. Right now mostly what's left where I fish are stems with some ratty little growth on them and the fish do not care. There's more to the spot than the grass bed. Lots of big spots near open water have good water quality and water never sits or gets stagnant (good water exchange/flush). Those weeds will be just as good in January. Other similar spots, big winds, current and even boat wake knocks the weeds apart by this time of year.

Even though there is no doubt a general transition to deeper, rockier or hard-bottomed structure, dead or dying weeds still hold fish...if your lake is generally lacking in such hard-bottomed structure, the edges of dead and/or dying weeds will often times still be the key areas holding fish (although the close proximity of those weed edges to the deeper water in the lake will be much more of a prerequisite as the water cools).

Thanks guys. We'll give it a shot tomorrow, and that's my last day in MN. I'll be back on LSC Sunday, and won't fish rocks or structure until I visit Mom and Dad again next summer.

I don't think the Water is cold enough yet to fish the deep classic hard bottom stuff---Keep with the weeds--fish the edges and find any coontail growing slightly deeper than the Cabbage---Yes--try the inside edge of the weeds if there is a distinct edge--That shallow water weed edge can be the ticket sometimes and might surprise you every now and then with a big fish.---I have a few more weeks until I head up for my fall fishing trips--Mid OCT to NOV for me---But I am getting the itch with the nice cool evenings!!! Good Luck

They're still in the weeds, and on rocks...check it all.

I like to consder where the game fish may be at this time.

The Musky haven't been there eating the cabbage. There' looking for the fish that are there. Look for the Muskys wherever the fish are seasonally staging. Maybe at a little deeper bars or drop off edges this time of year.
