Location: In the cabbage | I just traded my Shimano Compre med action ( from another thread ) For a Fenwick HMX rod ( 9 ft, 1/2 oz - 2 1/2 oz lure (15-30 line) Med-Hvy action ) Yes Its a steelhead rod, BUT I imagine Id do ok with smaller musky baits on this. I also got a Shimano Catala 400 reel with it. My grandfather bought it off ebay and said Ill trade ya this for your rod. The real is a bit beat up but the rods clean. All and all I think I got a good deal, What do you guys think???

| I've used that exact rod for pier casting for salmon with 2oz. Mr. Champs and it works great for that purpose but I would not use it for musky fishing as the tip is just to light on it. Remember that it's designed for distance casting light baits with lighter line, it's not designed for musky baits and heavy line. |

Location: In the cabbage | The purpose of the setup is smaller musky baits ( rapalas, small bucktails ect ) I also fish the root river every year for salmon so its not a total waste! |

Location: In the cabbage | But on the flip side, I have caught pretty decent fish ( 40 inch northern ) ON a Med Lite shimano (spincast) setup, I think Its about how your work the fish, But you guys prolly are right, Im still gonna give it a whirl, worse case: I have a shimano Catala 400 reel I can use on something else, Has anyone used this reel before?

| I had a rod built out of salmon rod...st croix 8 foot, awesome for smaller baits and has caught a large amount of muskies up to 52 inches or so on it....that rod will be great and you will enjoy throwing it...BR
On the same note, I have done well on my jig/creature rod with larger fish as have others on this board...just because many folks like lugging saltwater gear around doesn't mean that is the only way...have fun.

Location: In the cabbage | Thanks for the support BenR, The late Len Hartman was a family friend ( best friends dads best friend ) I grew up with his school of thought ( troll, 10lb line and spin cast ) But Alot of that has changed recently, I want the best of both worlds, I just gotta find out how.

Location: Smith Creek | One of the things I worry about with lighter tackle is overplaying fish. If you have to fight them to point of exhaustion the fish doesn't have as good of a chance on the release.
Catala should be a nice reel for a few seasons. |
