Hi guys,
Well, I've got a great excuse to buy another rod. I'll be going to the Angle this coming weekend and wouldn't mind having another backup rod for my trip. So I've been checking around the local sporting good stores for my perfect stick. Tell me whatcha ya think?

I currently have 4 rods that I use for muskies they are:

6' St.Croix Heavy Action
6'6" St.Croix Med-Heavy Action Premier Series
6'9" St.Croix Heavy/Power Action Premier Series
and finally 7'6" Med-Heavy Premier rods.

I want a rod that falls between my 6'9" and 7'6" rods. But I may not be totally opposed to buying an 8 footer neither. I use the 7' 6" predominately for my bucktails and topwater while the other rods are used for the jerkbaits and crankbaits. I'm looking for a rod that will handle the bigger crankbaits nicely and some of the gliders. So I was wondering what do you suggest I should get?

I also want to add that I've been tossing around the idea about picking up the St. Croix Avid series rods or some Gloomis rods. I seen some Gloomis rods that were 7' or 7' 2" long that were Medium action Rods. They were classified as Medium Bucktail rods, but will they work O.K. with crankbaits or gliders? They also had some 7'7" Gloomis Rods that were Med-Heavy action that I was also considering.

O.K. now that I probably confused the heck out of ya. Let me hear your suggestions, opinions, and comments on what setup I should get. Should I pick-up another Bucktail Rod up for a backup? Or pickup a rod that falls between my bucktail and jerkbait poles?

catch ya later,
Krappie

P.S. I have the 6 footer in retirement since my days of switching over to superlines. Should I bring this pole out of retirement? Or keep it on the garage wall?

If your going to spend the big bucks like that call up Thornes and get one of their custom rods. They'll be able to hook you up with exactly what you need. I have Premiers and Avids, but I love my Thorne rod the best.

I was going to buy the 7'7" gloomis but the thing is very heavy. Talk to thorne bros like treats says, the guy who builds them is a rod genious and can point you to exactly what you need.

Go with the St Croix 8 footer and we'll be seeing your other short rods on the swap board.[;)]
The 8 footer is the best all around rod that I've ever used.

What are the garuantee on the Thorne Bros rods? I for one have a 7'7" GLoomis rod and love it for anything but my cranks. It is really like in my opinion. I don't like it for cranks simply because a 7' rod works my cranks with less effort.

Cisco, I think they have a lifetime warrenty. I think it depends on the model you get though. Give them a call, they're the best muskie rods out there.

I would go with the G-Loomis 6'10" jerkbait rod, it can handle it all and is lighter and stronger.

I would also not be afraid of the G-Loomis medium action rods, they are still muskie rods and can handle really big fish just not magnum dawgs or reef hawgs. I got the 6'5" medium action bucktail rod and love it, I got it set up with a 5500 for those with smaller hands like ladies and kids. I was using it last week and before I noticed it I was casting jerkbaits with it and never felt under powered.

Seems like you have a lot of St-Croix rods so why not try the other Cadilac out there. [:p]

Knowing how you fish AND the idea of needing a "back up" rod.... I'd think your money would be best spent on a 6'9" St. Croix Avid. If I had to fish with just one rod, you'd have to kill me to take my 6'9" Legend away. Wish I could find a reason to get a new Avid.... just like you.

Good Luck spending your money!!!!

P.S. I'm only familiar with the St. Croix line-up and have never fished with a Loomis or others..... so can't comment on the "other" brands.

krappie since this is an extra or impulse buy,,,get the thornes,,,just think up what your ideal length, action would be and call and tell them to do it, You will be pleased,,,dont ever pick up the diamond back rods with titanium guides they sell for $350-$450 but nothing in musky fishing can compare

Hey guys thanks for all the replies and suggestions. Keep them coming, I really appreciate all the help. The only problem is that I have to have the whip in my hand before Friday the 12th. Would Thornes have a pole in my hands by that time? Slamr I got your email. I'll get back to ya.

catch ya later,

Krappie,I have more equipment then, well you know!I would stay away from the G-MONEY,I had the 7'7" bucktail and after about the 3rd outing the finish and wrappings started to come off and then came the FIGHT about the so-called life warranty.Long story short, its light, great action But they finally took it back and I got another St.Croix(2nd 8`er) and 4 baits.I would go that route or as said before Thornes!Just my experience with a G-MONEY!Satisfaction no always guarenteed! Thornes has a large supply of rods onhand premade in the most popular lenghts/actions. They also do custom work. Give them a call and see what they've got. I was up there yesterday and saw a rack of them.

Krappie, 8 foot st. croix premier is fairly stiff so You can handle those big crank baits and get them deep in figure 8 and can work gliders great too. Pick one up at the store you might think different but I think they work great for what your looking for.

This is a good all around rod. Really aids in a nice big figure 8

Handyman, I think it is wrong for you to attack G-Loomis just because your the only guy who ever was unsatisfied with one of their rods.

You calling them g-money is also bullcrap, come on you get what you pay for. Last time I checked the top of the line st-croix were priced the same if not more, nothing wrong with a company offering only one line especialy a top line.

Now I have had clients step on a rod crushing and eye, I sent it back and got it fixed no questions asked.

Now I just bought my first st-croix this winter and it's sitting in the garage right now without even getting 1 cast out of it as it has a broken tip and snapped my line as I was testing it's action. Thank god this was before I fished with it. But I am not going out there telling the world that St-croix makes garbage rods, I am going to have to try to have it fixed when I have the time to locate a repair shop qualified and close enough.

G-Loomis makes some of the best rods on the market today, you may have delt with a shop that gave you a hard time but in no way will you ever find a better built rod and service then you get from G-Loomis. I personaly buy 8 G-Loomis a year and have yet to get a bad rod.

Did I mention that St-Croix makes some great rods.

TM,You can say what you want and I will do the same!I just stated the FACTS as it was what I got and how I was dealt with.I am not sponsered or get any deals from any distributor or afilliated with anyone so I expect to get what I pay full price for and when I don`t I will state that fact. You can use all the G-MONIES and I will stick with what works for me made near my back-yard!To each his own! If you decide not to spend the money on a thornes or loomis, get the 8' st croix premier. I use it for everything and it works great.

Here is another opinion. Screw the rod, spend it on brats beer and weasel's.[:p]
