| I took an older ('60s) 9.5hp Johnson in because I couldn't get it to run for more than a few seconds. I got a call back with an estimate for the work. He say there was plenty of spark and compression was great but it wouldn't run without the choke on and it spit a lot of fuel from the overflow. He quoted me at $350 for the work. Is this a fair price for a carb re-build? |

Location: Elk River, Minnesota | Hiya,
The parts will be fairly inexpensive for that carb rebuild so what you are paying for is the time in rebuild. To me, that seems a bit high for one carb with very little to it. If you have any mechanical ability, you could do it yourself. There are not many parts to it, and with a little cleaner you could do it yourself. biggest issue will probably gunk clogging a jet.
With the age of the motor, I would suggest getting new fuel lines in the engine compartment (from the hose fitting for the tank line to attatch) to the fuel pump and on to the carb. If they are original lines, they could very well be breaking down inside and gunk getting into the carb, which if the carb is rebuilt, it will be clogged again quickly. It would be more of a preventative maintenance issue than anything.
$350 seems a bit high to me....

| I agree with Steve.
I've heard ethanol will break down some of the older fuel lines and gunk up carbs. I'd try the cleaning the carb and replacing fuel lines. You may want to ask a friend to help.
good luck. |

Location: In a shack in the woods | That seems very high. Earlier this summer I had to take in my triple carb 25 horse. It cost me $450 for new fuel line, water pump, and carbs rebuilt with rebuild kits put in them. |

| I doubt a one carb rebuild is more than 1 or at the very most 2 hours work. Maybe even less for an experienced mechanic. For that price you could probably buy a new carb and put it on your self. Sounds ridiculous to me unless there is something getting lost in translation between you and the mech. |

| If I was any bit mechanical I would jump all over the rebuild myself. Thanks for the advice about getting new fuel lines and for the quick responses. I'm gonna cross my fingers and hope his estimates run high. This is the only service the mechanic will ever get from me again though. I dropped the outboard off 5 weeks ago and I called them about every week and they hadn't touched it yet. I had to go in on Monday and I told the guy face to face that I wanted to pick up the outboard and take it somewhere else if he couldn't get it done by the end of the week. The next day (tuesday) I got a call with the estimate. |

Location: Elk River, Minnesota | Sounds like they don't want to do it. With the price they are quoting, I would suspect they WANT you to come and take it somewhere else. Where are you located? Chances are someone on here will know a good reputable mechanic or dealer to help you out. Heck...if you happened to be in the twin cities, bring it on over and we can do it together here...

| Thanks for the offer Steve but I'm in the Burbs of Chicago. When I talked to them last on Monday they said it would be done yesterday or today so if I don't hear from them by the end of the day its gonna go to another shop. |

Location: Mayer, MN | I rebuilt my Rochester two barrel for my 4.3L stern drive for about 20 bucks for a carb kit. I do all my own snowmobiles also, rather simple process. Internet has a wealth of knowledge if you have questions. |

How does an Amish guy know how to work on carbs? I thought they only knew how to build furniture. |

Location: Mauston, Wisconsin | 1960's 9.5HP carb rebuild -> Geez! $350/hr is pretty fair, if you're a hooker. Sounds like you got laid w/o any of the pleasure. I couldn't resist, I'm sure this post will get pulled.
Have fun!
