Rod Holders Not Staying Put!

Hi All,

I have Scotty's Rod Holders, with the flush mounts. I am having a problem with a few of them popping up when trolling with the rod tips in the water. Seems to be lure/speed sensitive. Believers and Slammer Deeps seem to happen more than other cranks do to harder vibration?. Does not happen with spinnerbaits. Also, the faster I troll, the sooner they pop up and back. This is a pain, as I have to constantly be pushing them back down.

Does this happen to anybody else? Is there a problem with the holder or flush mounts? Any suggestions?

Thanks all, and Tight Lines,

Shep[:sun:]

Shep;
I had the same problem with the same holder.Running
at 3 to 6 my holders would spin when hit by fish or the
lure hitting bot.People at Thornes said my drag was too
tight. The teeth that keep holder in position as to angle
to side of boat rounded off,as they spun. Scotty replaced
them.Less drag ,same problem.I ended up putting a bolt
thru and a wing nut to hold in position.ONLY DOWN EAST
AGAIN next time.

Shep, I have the same setup and have never had a problem. I use planer boards too and have caught quite a few fish and never had one pop out. Mine are a few years old maybe they changed something that makes them do that.

I FEEL YOUR PAIN!

My scotty's do it too. Especially on the rods at the greatest angle (perpendicular) to the direction of the boat. Throw in a high dragging lure like a slammer and some speed like 3.5-4 and the torque twists the holders right up and out of the flush mounts. I have been racking my brain to think of a tacky substance I could add to increase the friction on the teeth but haven't come up with anything. I tried adding grip tape but not enough clearance.

Anyone have a tacky spray that would work??

Down East holder is the only way to go. Shep next time you see me I will stop and you can check out my rig, unless I am guiding at the time. Never had a problem.

Down easterns are ok, but really noisy and not as easy to work with getting the rod in and out. Dipping a Scotty rod holder in the water seems to work for me.....dont ask why!

Cold days are no problem....its the hot days they like to slide up. Thats when I thought of the idea of dipping them in the lake when they keep popping out and it seems to work.

Guess we'll have to give Jason's fix a shot Cory. Only happens when I got the rod tip in the water. Never happens when I'm running boards, and happens alot with Deep Slammers, Jakes, and Believers.

Mike, I'm kinda committed to the Scotty's now. Got some big holes drilled in the gunnels! I have some DownEasters from my old boat, but would have to figure how to get them mounted.

Not really a problem, but it makes me jump every time they pop out!

Jason, thanks for the tip.

Well, Jason's tip of getting the holder wet with lake water seems to work, for the most part. Cut down on the pop outs quite a bit. Every once in a while I'll get a pop, but now I just keep an eye on them to see if they're sneaking up. Easy enough to see, so I just push them back down.

Thanks for the tip, Jason.[]

Hey thanks for this thread. Now after 4 years with scotty flush mounts last week my flat line rod holder started popping out. Thanks for the jinx. I think you are right it's with bigger baits. I will try getting it wet. When mine pops it almost looks like the rod and holder are going to go into the lake.

Well I dipped it in the water to see if that would help...it didn't.....maybe it was because the water was 83 stinking degrees!!!!!!!!!!!!! so much for the water "cooling" down the plastic so it doesn't torque as much. Will need to try it this fall in the cold water.

Still looking for something sticky/tacky to spray.......

Have the same holders only they say Cabelas on them. Simple solution. Take some electrical tape and wrap the insert once. It gives them some added friction and keeps them in. Sure you have to replace the tape once in a while but no big deal.

Good Luck,

Got a snail mail yesterday from Dennis F?. Not sure who he is, maybe dennis b? We've sent a few e-mails back and forth. He has an adaptor designed to allow the use of Downeasters on the Scotties flush mounts. I will look at it in more detail soon. Cory, with Dennis's permission, I could send you a copy. Dennis, are you out there? Or on another board? What say you?

Not one pop out last night, but that was because Jason was working his a$$ off keeping the rods free of salad! I did see some improvement last Friday, and Saturday by wetting them. Probably went 15 minutes, instead of 4 or 5 minutes. Helps, but doesn't eliminate the pops. Again, it happens more with the big deep divers, and when the boat rocks from side to side.

Bear, plastic electrical, or the cloth type?

I have used plastic electrical. But the cloth might even work better because the adhesive usually comes through the tape on the cloth kind.

Shep ;
Of course I'm out here.Sitting in beautiful Batavia near the home of the next world record , the Fox River.
The small knob and tee nut is the best I can come up with
Tim.You like the Scotty and this will allow you less aggre-
vation. If any of your friends have Wave Wackers, the screw
with plas head is about the right diameter.Length should be about 1 inch of thread IF you DIDN'T stiffen the gunnel.
The e-mail would allow you to use DownEasts without
putting more holes in the gunnels....
best regards and congrats on having some action!!!!!

I have tried electrical type grip tape and it didn't work due to the thickness....will try regular electrical tape next.

Hey Dennis, I live in oswego just down the road from you, where the real world record fish will swim down from batavia after getting tired of eating those fabyan parkway goldfish in search of redhorse heaven![;)]
