| Honda for sure.
I had 5 friends who jumped on the e-tech bandwagon, and now they have all blown up their E-Tec's. These are motors ranging from 60 hp to 250's.
Just got a call from a good friend about 4 days ago, he blew his e-tech AGAIN for the 2nd time and the factory will do nothing to help him.
I'm not willing to take that chance. |

First I have heard that E-Tecs blew up.
Are you sure that you are not confusing this with the older Evinrude FICHT problems? |

| Significant differences between a 2S DI and a 4S engine. Type of boat and what you want to use it for are key questions to answer. 4S's are not for everyone IMO. |

Location: Indiana | I have a 2008 150HP Etec and have been very happy with it. I've never been in a boat with a Honda motor so I can't comment on that side. |

| I've only ever seen one Etec have a problem....of course the motor was being told to push its boat through maybe 6 inches of water. 15mph to stopped in probably 10 feet. After it's owner got the lower unit free of the sandy bottom, it threw a fit for a while beeping all across the lake. Pretty entertaining, but I don't think it was the motor's fault. |

Location: Cedarburg, Wisconsin | I've got an E-TEC, a 2008 200HP. Had the choice of any motor out there and immediately rejected 4-strokes. I'll never understand why anyone would want a motor with more weight, less torque, lower top end, and more maintenance for their primary motor. My E-TEC starts faultlessly, needs no warm up, no messing with priming and choking, and talks to my gages and locator, giving me practically unlimited info on motor performance in real time. From what I can see, it uses almost the same amount of gas as my 9.9HP 4-stroke Prokicker for low speed operation so I'd not be adverse to trolling with it in certain situations, like when there is no chance of smacking rocks.
The Honda is a good motor from what I've heard too, just not for me. |

Location: SE, WI. | I've had 4 engines now On my ranger. First 2 were Honda 4 strokes...90HP.
Last 2 were Etecs. For me; I would NOT buy a 4 stroke again.
For you; If you run small amounts of hours yearly, I don't think it matters.
I fish hard water...Lime/calcium, The 4 stroke after approx 1000 hours of run time, engine alarms went off, and the water jackets were limed up and had to run a solution through then pull head to clean engine again. It happened to both 90 Honda's.
Now running the 90 Etec, then later 115 etech I had no problems with overheating due to lime or calcium deposits. I think the water jackets that cool engine were either larger or engine runs hotter. When I traded in my 90 etec, I was told that they never had anyone put more hours on a etec as I did. I had 2200 + hours of run time in 3 1/2 years use. I was one of the first to own the etec in this area.
I've heard of many types of 4 strokes having the same issues in this area due to hard water...Honda's, Merc's,Yami's...ect. Alot of Idle hours due to trolling or pontoons idling around.
I will not run a 4 stroke again. IMO, the new technology 2 strokes bring is the way of the future. I've had 2200 + hours on my Etech (90)HP, and currently have about 1000 hours on my 115 and never really had any problems, other than the Plugs foul because they use a champion plug, which I view as a poor plug. BUT the new irridium plug they are using in the Etecs have lasted much longer than the ones they started with.
If you do alot of trolling, and idling, I like the 2 strokes. If you don't put alot of hours on your engines, I am not sure it matters which you pick. The etec will cost about $1000 - $1500 more in price depending the HP you pick.
Hope this helps in your decision. My experiences might help you! |

| My 2008 150 HP E-TEC blew the #2 piston at only 18 hrs on the motor. BRP did take care of it quickly though. E-TEC's do Blow up,but I know all brands do at one time or another . I would look at a Yamaha 2 Stroke if it were me. |

| Talk to Hamernick....BOOM, BOOM, BOOM...as well as about 5 other MN musky guides that have blown their E-Tec's.
Not a good choice. |

Location: minocqua, wi. | bombardier makes snowmobiles with the same technology. i'll just say that i think they should just design it with cartridges to replace top-ends. i ride yamaha sleds and recently cats (suzuki). my brother has in the past 10 years replaced so many top ends on the bombi's that we've lost count. these sleds are fogged, serviced and run with factory premium oils ... |
