Wondering if anyone knows of hard thumping/rolling bait that trolls no deeper then 3 feet. (Besides spinnerbaits, bobbies/sledges or running short lines on cranks)

...An I missing something??

Thanks for any help

Maybe, you could try modifying a lip of a bait, seen guys do it wade fishing for pike in a very shallow area filled with zebra mussels. Also most of time while trolling your rod angle is helping the lure dive deeper. A high rod angle with a 9in SS shad might be what your looking for. Bad azz bait.

By your last comment it sounds like you don't want to short line. But if you use boards, you could troll even a deeper running lure at just 3 feet and still get it away from the boat. Essentially you would be short lining from the board to run the bait shallower. Not sure if that would be an option for you.

Leo makes a lure called the riffle runner that claims to run no deeper than 3 feet. I don't personally have any but do have a bunch of musky dawgs and they thump pretty good IMO. The riffle runner has a similar style look...

Just let out very little line. Lots of fish are caught on baits like Plows etc, set on the shallow eye with the leader's swivel right near the rod tip. I have a buddy who got a 54 on the Larry with a Plow on a 36" leader set back 11 feet in total (8' lead+3' leader). Shaving or messing with a lure's lip..be prepared to waste a few before getting it right. Like has been said, Beleiver on a short leash+shallow eye rumbles real hard and is very snag-resistant. One of the easiest baits to walk thru any kind of bottom or cover. Legend PerchBait is another one you can keep very shallow (we routinely drive over rocks <4' with them) and never hanhs up...its lip is rounded like the nose on the Beleiver, rolls off anything. They're a smallish bait but fish love them. With the short lines the first bait thru the spot's gonna be the one that gets hit.

On this same note, legend makes a lure called the outcast, which is a perchbait with a shallow lip, excellent for fishing shallow and can be short lined also.
