Location: Oswego, IL | Ok, here is my situation.
I have been saving up for a boat now for some time now and cannot deside to buy new or used at this point. What are the Pro's and Con's between the two I should carefully look into? Do I buy someone else'e headache? And am I really saving money by buying used, if it going to need more work sooner than I would a new one? What else?

Location: minocqua, wi. | all boats are head-aches. decide what you want first based on where you fish, what your towing capabilities are and where you're going to store it. then the rule of thumb is that you can get almost twice the boat used vs. new but if you finance anything there are considerations. i was a "new" buyer and have since become a "used" buyer and probably will never buy a new boat again. good luck either way you go .... look here and at the other place we're not allowed to mention and get a feel for the numbers ... lots of assistance from folks and i'm sure there are some archived threads you'll be able to cruise using the search function.

Location: Oswego, IL | I suppose when I am buying a used boat, 70% or more of the value would be in the motor? Thanks for the reply's, I have only fished out of a couple different boats, so I am very new to what to look for. Storage is not an issue, Towing is not an issue, but I am in Illinois, and frankly do not preffer to fish here, so will be traveling frequently. Maybe I should look into a REPO boat!

Location: Seymour, WI | One of the biggest cost savings in buying a used musky boat has to be in all of the accessories that come with used boats today. When you think of the cost buying a new trolling motor, graphs, gps, rod holders, and the cost of having all of that equipment installed, it doesnt' take much to get into thousands of dollars. That has to be one of the biggest advantages to buying a well cared for used boat.

Location: Rhinelander | With todays market, search the used boat classifieds.
This spring purchased a used Ranger 690vs and believe me, saved a considerable amount vs last years used market. The boat was not utilized to it's full potentional, as I added (3) graphs, keel gaurd, seats and a new Terrova along with some other add ons, but I knew this at the intial purchase.
My last two primary boats I had purchased new, kept the last one for 11 years and served me well, but was lucky that model gained in popularity along with the new sticker price. When I sold her this spring my out of pocket loss from an 11 year ownership was minimal.
In todays market, purchase used and you may be pleastantly surprised at the cost savings you can find.

Location: Mauston, Wisconsin | I'd listen to "Grass". If you've got the cash - go for what you want. But if the hit on your wallet is important, shop used. I was talking with a buddy in Rhode Island, with the economy and unemployment there, a whole lot of folks are off loading their toys to get survival cash. It's really a buyer's bull market right now. Boats -guns-ATV's-etc.
Same is true around here, I see a lot of toys sitting by the road with for sale signs. Just make sure you take it for a spin- I mean at least an hour on the water to check everything out.
I made that mistake w/my Skeeter when I bought it. When I drove up, he had the starting battery on a charger. Said he just took it out of storage- I had previously told him I wanted a ride before I bought it and that I was paying cash on the spot. Launched, boat ran perfect, handled well and had the features I wanted. Got back to his place, offered him $1200 less in cash from his asking price (his wife had caught him fooling around) - he took it- signed the title, bill of sale, I hooked her up to the truck & drove away (in MN).
Took it out that following weekend -after getting the paper work & registration done. Noticed the tach wasn't working. Then later that day went to start engine - click, click -dead starting battery. Short story - alternator rectifier/regulator was bad - it also provides the tach signal - $350 later it was fixed.
If I had the free cash and wanted a big water boat, I'd probably head to Rhode Island to find a Boston Whaler, they are sweet big water boats.
Good luck!

| I haven't see anyone ask you your age. I made my last purchase based somewhat on my age. I've been getting out on the water less and less every season it seems. I don't know how much longer my body will be able to take the pounding of muskie fishing, so I bought a new multi-species rig that will no doubt last me for the remainder of my career. It is very roomy and has everthing on it that I will ever need, even when I turn into a troller or a full time panfisherman.
Yes you can buy good used rigs, but I wouldn't stop looking at new ones keeping resale price in mind.

| I always buy used I can't justify the price of a new one when work, kids, and family don't let me get out as much as I like. Just remember when buying new, it is new. I have rigged 2 peoples new boat and just cause it is new doesn't mean it ready to go. Remounting poorly placed fish finders adding more fish finders, installing a good charger system (dealer always give cheap crap) and battery combo, we running wiring from the factory (they generally give #10 I go to 6-8 depending of the motor), putting on rails and rods holders, changing out the bilge to a auto bilge, adding interior lighting, tool holders, ropes, bungee ropes, I even change out 2 of my cheats to flip up cheat as to not break rods and get the net caught, etc, etc. etc. . Guys with boats to this over several months and years, perfecting the locations of where they want everything in the boat. When you have to do it out of the box it cost way more than you think. Before I bought my alumacraft used I looked into the new one. I had the money for new and the quote 22,000 then I added tax title and many of the things listed above it got past 28000 pretty quick. I bought a 2 year old one for 14000 and added 3K to it in its first week with a new hummingbird si and other misc stuff.
I would buy used and upgrade electronics and trolling motor. The cost of just that is 3 - 4 K.
