I have been making my own Muskie bucktails and need advice on what hooks you prefer and why. The mustad 3551 2/0,3/0,4/0,5/0 hooks is what I have been using. I think there is better hook out there but dont know which route to go. I would appreciate any feedback, Thanks..........Jim

I think the 3551 is a pretty good hook. I've only used it in the bigger sizes though - 6/0 to 8/0. My one complaint is it seems like they are hard to sharpen at times, and don't stay sharp as long as others. Before long, I have sharpened the hook down to where it get's stubby and needs to be replaced.

In the sizes you mentioned, I really like the Eagle Claw 774 hooks. They seem to sharpen easily, stay sharp, and have a long enough point before the barb so they penetrate well.

Like it was said the Mustad 3551 in 5/0,6/0, and 7/0 hooks are the sizes I use. Larger hooks do NOT hamper a bucktail's performance or action. Use them because you'll love the extra gap that they provide and that just may be enough to hook and hold. Also a larger hook is hard to swallow than a smaller one.
