i fish alone most of the time. i have to rely on other people to take pics. i like to get a pic if the fish is over 40 inches. recently caught and released a 48 had another guy take 3 pictures with my disposable camera. no pics of the 48. devastating. never had a problem with disposable camera in 9 years. i want to get a digital camera with a timer more than 10 seconds that will take more than one picture with one touch of a button. is there a camera under 300 bucks out there. maybe even waterproof freezeproof and a remote? i also need something to mount the camera. any ideas?

I would shop around for a used nikon D-70 or D-50, maybe e-bay or find one reconditioned. You'll get great pics and the available remote combined w/ the on camera ability to set timer and remote makes taking pics alone very easy.

I just purchased a new camera within the past year. i went with the Canon powershot sx110 IS. This camera has a timer that you can set... probably 10 seconds then it takes 3 pictures. My previous camera which was an Olympus took 5 pics off the timer but I had a hard time finding one that did that. I honestly think 3 is enough though. I paid $260 for this at Sam's Club. It is a medium sized camera, which you can fit in your pocket but a bit bulky compared to some of the super compact ones now. I just checked the book and it said operating temperatures as low as 32 degrees F.

If you want something smaller and since you mentioned freezeproof and waterproof, check out olympus stylus cameras. a friend of mine has one. The thing I didn't like about it was it felt too small in my hands, it always feels like I don't have a decent grip on a camera that small. I think it only takes one pic off the self timer so you better make it count.

As far as setting it up. Just get a tripod and get the camera set in the correct mode. Get ahold of the fish then lean over and press the button (or you may opt for a remote). You will have about 10 sec to get the fish up where you want and put on your best smile. Hope this helps.

You can compare cameras or even search by your own criteria with websites such as dcresource.com or dpreview.com
I use the Nikon D50, but there are some good point & shoots out there. I like most of the Panasonic Lumix cameras and fuji has won some best camera in class awards for some of their models under $400.00. Good luck.

You're probably looking for something higher quality than this, but I bought a Canon PowerShot A530. It's a 5.0 Mega Pixel camera. You can set the timer to wait up to 30 seconds, and take anywhere from 1-10 pictures. I think I have it set on a 20 second delay and 10 pictures. I dont know if it takes magazine quality pictures, but it does decent. The best part for me - I bought it for $34 on Ebay. I want to say they were about $160 new. I don't have to worry about taking pictures of fish in the rain, or getting the camera bumped. At that price, I can afford to buy a new one now and then.

The timer feature on this one is VERY nice though for doing what we do.

The first picture with the northern was taken by the guy I was fishing with, but the other two were by myself. I didn't take the time to get the sun angle etc. just right, but this gives you an idea about the picture quality of the camera. The bottom picture is also cropped quite a bit.

I agree, a d70 is a good camera, and theyre pretty cheap nowadays. I use the remote control for it, but the downside is that the focus isnt always with me, so I have to prefocus to be sure. I dont know if thats related to my camera or what it is.

This is the next camera I'm going to get.
http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/item/features/495900773/panasonic...

I've currently got a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3. It's got a 10X zoom. The new version of it has a 12X zoom. Nice for taking pictures of eagles/deer/etc but for pictures of fish in the boat or cool weather/sunset/etc landscapes the zoom isn't needed. The waterproof and really overall tough construction of the model I link to above would be nice to have for a boat and all around "pocket" camera. Regarding setting it up for self portraits while fishing alone, don't know but I've been thinking of the same thing too, duct tape to the butt seat in the back of the boat has been my best idea. Good luck it your search.

Also, the digital camera review sites mentioned in an earlier response are both very good sources of info. And I can't say enough good things about Vanns, great internet store.

If any of you has an empty pedistal base, that is a reasonable distance from 'somewhere' in the boat, you can make a cheap, effective 'self picture taking device.' I took a PVC pipe, put a cap on one end, and put a bolt through the cap, with the threads sticking out. Just screw the camera into that, stick it in the empty base, and there you go. I wrapped a little Duct Tape around the PVC to get the perfect fit.

My set up is pretty similar to what curleytail uses. My camera is a Canon A95. I just took my first solo pic with it last week.

I use a Canon with a small flexable tripod (Gorilla Pod)that I wrap onto my steering wheel, I set the timer at 25 seconds, 5 picture sequence. With practice I have worked out the best place to be in the boat, so I start the camera, grab the fish, sit on my rear platform, everyting done in about 30 seconds. (I get the camera ready before I start to fish, and when it's alittle rough I bungee the steering wheel so it stays steady)

Here's a review of several different cameras:

The gorilla pod is pretty cool, I saw them at best buy the other day. I also migh rig up an extra seat base as suggested above to hold the camera.
