Location: Southern Ontario, Detroit River and Lake StClair | I've been at this game long enough that I have versions of lures in both their original non-rattle versions and new rattle versions. Some crank baits, some glide baits. Personally I've found that the old non rattle versions of my baits out produce the newer rattle versions. I'm just wondering what everyone thinks of the whole rattle thing in general. I know in theory rattle baits should be better in dirty water but I've never found so. I fish Lake St.Clair. Over the last 25yrs the lake has gone through some huge changes with zebra mussels moving in. It went from having 2ft of visibility on a good day to now having 8-10ft. Back then 30yrs ago Believers were "the" bait to run. That's when there were still basically a locally made non rattle bait. When they came out with the new "improved" rattle version everyone just about had a fit. They didn't catch as many fish and we couldn't get the old ones anymore. I guess what I'm getting it is if you had two identical baits in every way with the exception of one with rattles and one with out which would you choose and why?

| I guess if I had a choice I would go without rattles. I believe fish have some ability to form avoidance behaviours if they have adequate ques to differentiate stimuli. I am of the opinion, in waters where rattles are commonly used, being hooked a couple times may be adequate to form that avoidance behaviour. |

Location: Southern Ontario, Detroit River and Lake StClair | I guess from the looks of things (90 views and one reply) there is not much interest in if a bait has a rattle in it or not. I find that very interesting considering Muskie fishermen are some of the most anal guys on the water when it comes to bait selection.

Location: Latitude 41.3016 Longitude 88.6160 | stain water = rattles
clear water = no rattles
start with this simple rule and let the fish tell you what they want. BUT I fish a lake in CANADA for Lake Trout and you can see 30ft down and the rattle baits are killers on that lake over a non rattle bait. On the new baits drill a hole in the bottom of the bait and remove the balls and reseal the hole with a 2 part glue, to water seal the small hole.

| I for one have much better succes on non rattle baits of all types.I have kept personal loggs on the subject becuse i was skeptical of my rattle baits.
You know somethings up when you and your trolling partner are running two rods and the silent one keeps getting smashed and nothing on rattles.
Changing to no rattles on both baits and both rods start getting bit really opens up you eyes and makes you go hmmmm.
Now i am not trying to steal this thread but since we are on the subject what methods have you guys used to make rattlers into non rattlers.
I have a ton rattle baits and want to convert them all to silent killers but dont know were to start.
I am thinking drill them out and plug the holes or drill a small hole and fill it with epoxy?
What do yo guys think? |

| same question as k kid...anyone used the foam that dahlberg sells on his site to seal leaking hollow plastic baits-might be two birds with one stone...but does it throw off balance/weight of bait...any experience with this or the seal the hole only method for specific baits? |

Location: WI | esoxlucifer; I think it's Chad Cain on the Badfish dvd who talks about foam-filling lures that leaked.
I caught my PB on a rattling Believer, but the week before I caught 2 fish in an hour on a non rattling one. I'll take one of each. I would like to experiment more with the non rattlers. Maybe I will in a month when I start trolling more. |

Location: Kodiak, AK | Tim- I like rattling Believers on our lake on the weekends (the few weekends that I venture out during the summer) and with all the nonsense, jet skis, power boats, traffic chop, etc. I go as loud as I can and throw big rattling 10" jointed Believers so they stand out. I've caught more than one fish in clean, clear water on big rattles....on weekend noisy water. During the week, which is when I ususally fish, I tend not to throw them, as the lake is much more quiet. |
