Location: Ogden, Ut | We were able to get out this morning for 3 1/2 hours of fishing on Pineview. I didn't even argue, the boys wanted to troll, so we did. We barely got the lines out and one of the baby Depth Raiders was acting up; kind of flopping around on the surface. Dane reeled it up to check on it and a smallmouth with delusions of grandeur was attached. We decided that it wouldn't count as his fish (we take turns when trolling - guess who goes last... ), and in about an hour another rod goes off. Nik and I clear lines and Dane fights a 35 to the boat and into the net, tying his personal best. Not much happened for about another hour, but shortly after moving to a new spot the same rod starts buzzing. Nik's turn. He grabs the rod and I notice he's having a bit more trouble with this one - as I'm clearing lines he's grunting and straining against this fish. I'm kind of giggling to myself while he's fighting this thing thinking, 'man, he's not in any kind of muskie shape...' As it turns out, he's got a pretty good reason to be struggling, this fish is pretty nice. Just after the first look, it slowly turns and peels off about 15 to 20 yards of line - not fast or jerky, just a steady swim, straight away from the boat. I was truly impressed with the strength of this fish. After a bit more struggling by both the angler and the fish, she is scooped up for her photo op. New personal best for Nik at 43.5"! A couple of pics and back in. Not a bad day for the boys - even better for Dad.

Third place today with many, many, putts. Ugh. Should have won by five. I know what we're doing tomorrow. Even she wants to practice. |

Location: Southern Ontario, Detroit River and Lake StClair | Sweet.......getting out with my two boys is my favorite thing. They are 13 and 16 now but but start Muskie fishing when they each were around 5. It's been a whoot watching them take steps from first fish, to first legal fish to first 50"'r and so on. You have some good memories in the making for all of you..........keep it up Dad.
Good Fishin'

| Now those are two boys being raised proper! They'll be on The Circuit before you know it.
Smallies always amaze me as to the baits they’ll hit. I've caught them on Musky topwaters before, too.

Location: Ohio | Great story My Son caught his first Muskie last week but he is 17, we just got into this sport last year and we are addicted ! and I wish we would have started years ago What possesses a fish to hit a lure that is just as big or bigger than the fish, as in the case of this Smallmouth? I was using a small Shad Rap one time and caught a Bass that was maybe 1/2" longer than the lure and surely would have choked to death if my lure would have been a real minnow |
