Kind of confused with the US BaseMap, and the Lake Insight options. If I want to use the enchanced maps on the Fishing Hot Spots PRO card, I need to buy the Lake Insight version correct? Is the detail really that much better?

The difference between the US BaseMap and Lake Insight are as is.

The Insight has the preloaded Fishing Hot Spots Maps in the unit. The US BaseMap has nothing preloaded other than the lakes basemap. So you will not have any kind of lake information preloaded with the BaseMap.

What I would suggest is, go with the US BaseMap, you then can take the $100 you would spend on Insight and buy your choice of a Lakemaster chip or the Navionics Chips for the US BaseMap model. I know the new Navionics chips have really improved a lot on a lot of different bodies of waters this year from what I've seen and heard from numerous people. I think going this route is probably your best bet.

Alright, that makes sense. The cabela's and Lowrance websites aren't very clear about the difference. Thanks ..............

Mike,

Here is a link to the Lowrance website, this can give you all the information you'll need in regards to the US BaseMap and Insight. Any further questions, let me know.

Tj, any word on portable HDS units like when cabelas had the 522C iGPS model? I want a soft cased hds5 for my 14' boat. I have only one battery for the TM and a 8 amp gel cell for my current fish finder. (5" screen, gps, and color are all must have's)

I haven't heard about anything in regards to a portable unit yet, but I'll do some poking around with the Lowrance folks and see whats up. I'm guessing Lowrance is focused on getting StructureScan released and any other bugs worked out before looking at a portable HDS. Just a guess though.

I have two HDS-7 units with the insight maps and only one navionics card and on some lakes I like the insight maps better. They have better contours and sometimes more accurate data (not missing small islands). Plus it's a back-up system in case something happened with my navionics card.

Any unit can be made portable. I have a Global Map 522C that is completely portable. This unit has an external antenna.

I set it all up on RAM mounts and a Genz Blue Box. I just run it on a small 12V battery (like you would a Vexilar), and I can use it when I go ice fishing too.

I did a similar thing w/ my 334. I found an old portable box on clearence. It had the wrong mount on it so I used a grinder to take if off. I drilled holes so I can take the mount off my ram mount and put it on the box. It has a vexilar style battery and I also purchased the ice fishing transducer and use the vexilar float and stop w/ it. It is an awesome overall fishfinder. An HDS-5 would be the same...only better.
