My boat has been sitting for about a year. I noticed a small amount of oil that dripped from the skeg.
I am finally getting the boat in next week. Should I be concerned?

Thanks, Muskyfreq

I'd look to see where the oil is coming from. If it is flowing from the hole where the screw is, then I would check the gasket on the screw. Somehow my gasket got lost when the lower unit lube was replaced. Thus, it dripped too.

It is always best to replace the lower unit lube just before storing for the winter. Otherwise, any water in the lower unit could freeze and cause a crack in the lower unit. Hopefully, your leak is from a loose screw or a missing /poor gasket.

check where the lube is coming from to determine if there is a crack in the lower unit.

Hopefully, someone with more knowledge can help more. good luck.

If its a 2 cycle motor sometimes unburned oil will drip out of the exhaust/ propeller housing- if its just a few drops it might be normal and wouldn't worry about it-just check and make sure it is not the lower unit oil- that will usually be thicker and have a nasty smell to it -

If it's very dark I wouldn't worry about it, probably just from the exhaust if you fogged it before storage as you are supposed to. If it is honey colored, then it would be from the lower unit and could be a problem with the prop seal.

The more I go slow (trolling) the more oil my 15 merc doesn't burn. Get's smokey and occassionally I have to hit the gas and fly at my top speed, 23mph, to burn up some of the oil.
