Location: Presque Isle Wisconsin | A. Row in Figure eights or change direction frequently not in a straight line
B. Pull on the rod at intervals to produce a speed change
C. BOUNCE THE LURE ON STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS (ROCKS ). Baits that work well for this ride in a more perpendicular fashion such as Ernie baits,Depth Raiders etc. This is the most effective tactic I ever found for producing a strike while rowing. Frequently the hit will come just as the bait comes off the end of the rock bar or other structure and begins to swim freely again. |

| I haven't tried the figure eight path line yet. lil Ernies have been good to me as well, but I would love to see them deeper (25-35ft) somehow. I haven't messed with lead line etc, but I believe there is a weight system out there.
Thanks for the pointers Howie!

| You don't need any fancy weight system, all you need is some in-line sinkers or other sinkers that you can attach to a barrel swivel. Experiment with different weights and use a line counter reel and keep a log to repeat the desired depth.
I make sinkers from 1-6 ounces and use them when I want to get a lure like a Grandma down 10 feet or more.
Pumping the rod might be just a little hard to do when you are rowing the boat, but you can make your lures surge forward by really digging in the oars for short bursts.
I'm going to make sure that my daughter dates a nice strong hockey player and get him to row my butt all around Vilas County.

| I agree, we used to always "pump" on the oars and "stall" on the oars watch for that rod or board to go sailing..........

Location: Oregon | You guys ever use jet divers? You can buy them in 10, 20, 30, and 50' sizes. We use them alot here for salmon fishing. They are really easy to use. If you bought a 50' diver and put your lure 6' behind it you could easily reach 25'.
Here is a picture of one:
