Location: Stillwater | I don't know whether to get the calcutta 400 B or the daiwa saltist. I would use it for big blades with lots of drag soft plastics and other heavy baits. Which one should I get? |

Location: Sw Pennsylvania | I've had them both. The calcutta is a great great all around reel and will pull big blades but you will be working to drag them, and working hard to burn them, even with a power handle. The diawa is heavy but will burn the big blades with ease, i'd suggest the levelwind models if your gonna be using other baits also. |

| take a look at the avet sx models. they only come in non levelwinds but that's no big deal. that's the direction i recently went since i use only left handed reels.
i am extremely pleased with it and also like the fact that they are american made!. you will also have your choice of one or two speed models. cabbagekeyrodandreel.com. is where i purchased mine from. talk to eddie....

Over time any reel can be broken, but your 400TE is more than addequate for double 10's. I have a 400B without a power handle and I don't think dbl 10's pull hard at all. For burning though you need a Saltist or Trinidad. |

Location: Kodiak, AK | So lemme get this straight, for blades you want a higher or lower gear ratio? Do you want 4.9:1 or do you want 6.1:1? |

It depends....some want the higher gear ratio to burn 10's, and some want the lower ratio for ease of retrieve. |

| for example...with a 2 speed avet sx you can blow db 10's out of the water pretty easy all day long if you choose to when it's in the 6:1 / 36" per crank mode and when you switch it to low gear, 3.8:1 / 23" per crank you can't even tell the blades are turning until it's next to the boat! |

| i've used two lunas for 5 years now and greased / oiled 'em once a month and they are smoother than when new and have yet to replace a single part. great for big plastics and eveything else down to 1 oz bucks when adjusted properly. i don't own a saltist but i have a non levelwind avet and in my opinion yes the luna is more versatile overall but 5 casts with a db 10 with a luna and i took it off...it beat me up compared now to using the avet sx for db 10's... |

Go into Thorne Brothers in Fridley and they'll get you set up with the reel and spool it w/ Masterbraid.
I know they have them, as I bought one yesterday.
Catch 'em!!!

High end - Shimano Calcutta 700TE
Low end - Shimano Tekota 700 |

| if $220.00 is in the "range"...avet sx made in california |

Location: Sun Prairie, WI | Real easy answer...if I feel the product is superior, that's where my money goes. PERIOD. I don't care if it's made on Mars. If I feel a product fits my needs better, that's where my money goes. If it's made in the US, even better. If it isn't, too bad. Then the US should build that particular product (pick one) better than the overseas competitors. For an example, check out any US car company and why the Japanese slapped their face in the hallway, kissed their girlfriend, and stole their lunch money. |

That depends on how fast you want to fish big blades.... |

| Hahahaha. Are you burning blades(10's and 13's) 14 hrs a day for 7 days a week???? I read somewhere that you HAVE to burn 'em to catch fish. Somebody better tell the fish. I really don't know where this "burning" thing started, but the reel manufacturers must be loving it.LOL. Have had a couple fish in the boat on blades the last 5 years and very few were "burned". Boatside? Now that's another story.Speed triggers 'em to eat. Calcutta 400TE with a power handle is more than adequate. Best I've used. Lunas were great until ani-reverse issues brought me back to Shimano. Leavin' the dance with who brought me. I must be gettin' old. |

Location: APPLETON, WI | Maybe this is getting off-topic... but maybe I'm outside of the norm since I try and vary my retrieve on bucktails. Whether it's Double 10's, 13's or a Mepps... I vary my retrieve. Are you guys actually talking about casting Double 10's and burning them back to the boat on each and every cast? I'm relatively new to the sport, so I guess I'm asking. |

| Jonesi I disagree 100 percent. 400te is not "adequate" for burning. Speed kills. You should know that sometimes slowwwww rolled will get the hit and sometimes mach 1 is the only thing that will trigger the hit. It changes all the time. End of story. |

Location: Kodiak, AK | So how fast is burning? Is burning just reeling as fast as you can? (Forgive me and go easy on a gear newb....burning isn't a technique we're able to use on a fly rod.) |

Location: Twin Cities | IMO it's not that you need to go fast all the time, but when you need too, you can't go fast enough...it's a matter of having the right tools in the tool box to cover the situations. Get the fastest/best reel you can afford, you can always reel slower but can only go fast when that's the ticket!
It's amazing as well how much EASIER it is to fish big stuff at a "regular" (whatever that means) pace using an oversized reel, takes the work out of a 12 hour day throwing blades. |

Location: Eagan, MN | Guess I'm not sure what burning means anymore either... I put 3/4 oz of weight on my dcg's, and I can blow them out of the water easily w/ a 7000 or 700te. Those two reels 'only' pull in around 30" of line. For everyone cranking faster than me, what are you weighting your bucktails with? downrigger balls? I agree w/ jonesi... this burning thing has been blown way out of proportion. |

| If I can't trigger 'em with a 400TE, either out on a cast or at boatside, then I guess I won't catch 'em. Not adequate???? LOL X 10,000. Apparently it had was adequate for the 4 fish last night in League.2 out and 2 boatside. I agree , speed kills, but only if you know how to use it . A reel that will retrieve at mach 10 means squat at boatside. I'll take technique any day. Now THAT is the end of the story. Hahahahahahahaha. |

| I really like the Penn 975. It is not a true burner, but has a big enough spool to make up for the low ratio, and a good anti reverse for jerking plastics. Good luck man!!

Location: Toronto, Ontario | I have a few buddies who absolutely insist that the best all round musky reel is the 700TE and that it's perfect for big blades. As soon as I have the extra $450, I think that that is the reel I'm going to buy. I can't stand the 7000C3i on my Sling Blade right now.
