Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | Just curious as to see how muskiefirsters deal with losing fish, especially big ones. Do you stare blankly? Are you a talker afterwards? Personally I have many different reactions some bad, some good....let me hear your stories

If you keep playing it over in your mind about what you could of done to keep the fish pinned it will eat away at you time and again and likely cause another losed fish. Unfortunately i've been here more than i like to admit this season... |

Location: University of Hartford | Immediatly curse and swear.... after a moment has past, the shake my head, check the bait for damage/ hooks and then get back to fishing. I dont catch enough to really lose them, and when they do get off, well all it cost me was a picture. |

Location: SE Wisconsin | I gasp, drop my jaw and give a curious stare that seems to last a moment. Then I question what happened, followed by justifications, (e.g. There was nothing I could have done; She was too far out; That fish was barely hooked; She charged the boat, I couldn't keep up with her; Etc.)
The biggest fish I've ever hooked and seen was a day I'll never forget. We had two boats out this day on Big St. Germain and one boat forgot a net. We flipped a coin and lost, so the other boat had the net. I hooked up to a fish that cleared 50+ with no question; boy was she girthy, too! We had her up to the boat horizontally and tried hand landing her to no avail. My buddy had his hand around her tail and she freaked out, but didn't come off. With walky-Talkies we had called for the net and as the hand off was being made, what was a now relaxed fish then turned furious and with an explosion of power, she made a power dive under the boat and off she came. There were several people on shore and on thier docks watching this performance as we were hollering in excitement and clearly being dragged around - It was a flat day in a john boat with a 40lb+ fish pulling us around.
A lot of heads must have shaken when they heard me yell, M-er F-er at the top of my lungs and slam my rod on the surface like a little boy - I was 18 at the time. Needless to say, I don't do that anymore - sware and throw a fit. Three years before that, at 16 years old I cried on that same lake after losing a fish close behind this ones size. Whitecaps and a V-haul don't go well together when you're all alone, but I crossed the lake and hit my favorite spot - the same spot. She hit the same bucktail as I used three years later. Had her up to the boat but couldn't get a net under her. I didn't speak, I was alone, but I let that boat drift a while as I sat there and I swear a tear rolled down my cheek. To me, at that age, catching that fish meant more than anything to me! |

| I had seen a guy beat his dog with hat after lose low 40s at forest lake. Its p'd me off that he take it out on poor cute dog.. Heck I have a stupid dog but I don't beat her when I lose fish... when I lose fish I just say$%^& few time then get back in game. |

| I hooked up with a fish years ago, out on Heartbreak Hump on the Chip, and had it go straight away and break me off, and truly it ruined my whole summer. It was really my only opportunity to fish that season, it ruined the week and about made me hang up on musky fishing. At some point you have to accept that hooking up and landing big fish is much more of a tenuos proposition for you, and even more so if you fish alone. However, you also need to accept that the biggest challenge is to hook up with them in the first place, and that if you are succeeding in doing that, you will eventually get yours.

This year i've come to realize that if the fish eats whether it gets hooked or not, I did everything (ok almost everything maybe the hookset failed me) I need to and triggered that fish. On to the next, keep doing it, it worked once, it'll work again. <just keep fishing just keep fishing just keep fishing just keep fishing> |

| I immediately start droping F-Bombs while staring at the floor of my boat shaking my head saying to myself "You dum%^&" Then start fiishing again while shaking my head for about another 10 min. It takes awhile to get over it. This happended a few to many times on Saturday!!!! |

| Well, I've come to accept that losing fish is an inevitable part of the Muskie fishing experience. That said, I tend to be more of a 'quiet loser' when they do get off. (Ah...shoot.) And then throw back out in hopes that he might be stupid enough to hit it again, or maybe he's got a hungry buddy with him. I've had a few hit again it after losing them.

| I'm 1 for 11 this year in MN, so I've had quite a bit of experience losing fish this year. The only ones I got really upset about were an upper 40's and a 52" fish I lost at the boat. I broke my favorite cowgirl over the 52...and I'm pretty sure the whole lake heard me yell the f-bomb that night...oops. |

A 48 to low 50 inch fish causes me to think about what happened so maybe I can do better next time. But really big fish are different. I get sick to my stomach when I lose a really big fish and a couple have cost me sleep.
One just has to keep after them and accept that one will lose some and catch some. |

Location: Sturgeon Bay WI | If I never get a look at it, fishing deep or at night, etc. I always tell myself, hey its ok that was a pike..LOL..it works, I dont get so worked up and I can keep my mind somewhat on the task at hand.
For the ones you get boatside, well thats a different story. I lost a pig on Cass a few years back, I had the hooks pinned pretty good I thought, she did a power dive right at the boat, and came airborne boatside, shook 2 or 3 good times, and out came the glider. I just shut up completely and didntt really talk..LOL.., if anybodys fault its mine, and get back to fishing, when i get off the lake is when I replay it more 
Or you can always blame it on your fishing buddy, we usually do that quite a bit-

1000+ Hrs on the water over the last 3 three years = about 5 hrs throwing a glider for me. I would say 80% of the fish I "hook" make it in the net - this include those "nippers" boatside that are on for about 2 seconds. Usaully fish dont get off when you have them hooked for over 10 seconds.... |

Just wondering, because I've never heard of a cowgirl breaking during the fight, if that was the case. |

Just wondering, because I've never heard of a cowgirl breaking during the fight, if that was the case.
I thought I broke my favorite cowgirl when I lost a low 40" fish on the fiure 8. I put a crappy hookset on it and got peeed and pulled my bait out of the water and slapped it hard on the water and bent both blades. got them straitend out and put a 39" in the boat on the next trip with it. |

| My biggest problem this year are the fish missing my lure completely! I should be well on my way to my personal best total for this part of the season! BUT like I always say about muskie fishing "SOMEDAYS YOU GET THE ELEVATOR AND SOMEDAYS YOU GET THE SHAFT"

| I have a lot of experience at this, so hearken.
At first I was stunned at the power and toughness of these fish: a broken line while pike fishing; a lure thrown on an arcing leap. I would sit there and shake my head: "They can't be that tough to land/boat."
Then I sat still in depression after a big fish broke my knot at boatside: "You have to do everything right. You have to use extra care."
Being seasoned, the last time it happened, when a nice fish hit a casted lure during outboard warm-up, then shook free at boatside, I just laughed to myself and went on.
Don't get angry. It's part of the experience. |

I had all three fish hooked and near the boat too. I would have turned them all loose anyway, but I wanted the picture. OK?
I took yesterday morning off from work and went fishing. I shoulda, woulda, coulda, had an upper 40 and a lower 40 inch fish. No big deal. Just missed the hook set. Although I am a little irrated by losing two low 50 inch Muskies in the past two weeks. I think that I'm setting the hooks way to fast again. Time to repeatedly tell myself "Must let fish close mouth before slamming the hooks home".
Its all fun though and sure beats work.

| I used to get really mad. Swearing, yelling, etc. I think one needs to examine their motivation for fishing if it makes them that angry. There's plenty of things in this world to be mad about. Fishing shouldn't be one of them.

| I think this thread seriously jinxed me. I am one for my last four after reading this thread and have missed my last 2. I lost one this morning that just broke my heart. I seriously just wanted to leave after it got off. I sat there for 15 minutes with the worst feeling ever. This last fish that got off hurt more than normal because I was busting my butt to get anything going in 20-25 mph wind. Started at 4am and never saw a fish or any sign of life. Then at 10:30 finally a nice hit, set the hook, good weight, good headshakes, 3 seconds later gone. I never saw the fish, but what hurt the most was how hard I had to work for that 1 bite in gale force wind, and I lost it. I did finally suck it up and fished 1 more spot and caught 2 pike...well worth it! Anyone else notice that it has been windy almost every day? I HATE wind!

A couple years ago on Eagle, I just caught a 49 the first spot we fished on our first day there. There were 4 more spots I lost bigger fish on, you'd think I was flipping out but i was just jumping up and down laughing, not sure why but it was so crazy just to see all those big fish eating you could almost assume that they'd eat on a figure 8. Could've been my best day ever. |

| I had a streak of 15 fish landed in a row. Last week on LOTW the first day of the trip I had a fish grab a spinnerbait hanging in the water as I was looking for my next spot to cast to. I couldn't tell if it was a muskie for sure or a pike, but since my thumb was on the thumb bar and not the spool, I didn't get hooks in it. I did manage to hook and land a fish every day for the next 6 days of the trip with a 49 incher being the largest. So I'm not sure if I've boated the last 21 muskies I've had hooks in or not, but I'm quite happy with the ratio I've got going. I'll ride it out as long as I can. Here's a photo of one from last week.

| The reaction of a friend trying to hook up on his first miskie boat side PRICELESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is a coin toss with the reaction I saw from my thirteen old nephew when he was with me in my deer stand and shot his 1st buck.
A friend and co-worker of mine has never caught a muskie and asked me to take him out this summer. The first time out he had a follow and it turned before it got to the boat. I tryed to tell him what to do with certain baits and how to work the figure 8.
The 2nd time out he was throwing a topwater and had one follow to the boat. He saw the fish coming and couldn't say anything. His jaw was moving and nothing but AH AH was coming out. When the bait was at his feet he left it in the water but didn't move it and the fish sat right behind the bait and once again it was AH AH. I told him to move the bait and he moved it about a foot and stopped. The fish moved up behind it sat there again and told to figure 8 the bait and he moved it about a foot again and stopped. This time the fish Moved up on the bait with its mouth wide open and just as it was going to eat it he pulled out of her mouth. The fish was about 45" and just wanted the bait. He couldn't talk for about 30 seconds and finally said that fish was HUGE while his hands were shaken...... PRICELESS. Wish I would have the video camera with.
He is HOOKED he went bought his own equipment.

Location: Ohio | I usually say a MF'er followed by a SOB then grin, look at whoever is with me and say, "That was cool wasn't it" and then grin from ear to ear. I am 2 for 6 in my own boat for the year, just caught my first Muskie at the wheel of my own boat on Monday, 90 minutes later my Son caught his first Muskie ever and I think what did it was I finally figured out to pound the hooks when the drag goes off instead of applying pressure. Weird thing is that we have had all 6 fish hit the same type lure and 5 of them on the same color scheme and now I don't want to switch but I know if I want bigger fish I need to go to a bigger lure.
