| Wondering if anyone here runs an Alumacraft Navigator 165 Tiller with a 2 stroke 60hp motor? If so, what is your high end on speed? I just found an inexpensive motor upgrade for my 2001 Alumacraft 165 Navigator. I had a 2000 Johnson 2 stroke 40 hp which was way underpowered for this boat which I knew when I bought it. I just upgraded to a 20001 2 stroke 60 hp. (Max HP for this boat) . I would have loved to get a 4 stroke but, I will did not want to spend the money. I will only have this boat another couple years. Any help here would be great. Thanks, Tom |

| I can't speak directly to this exact rig but I was looking at the 175 and I had found an awesome deal on a tiller. It had a 4 stroke 75 yamaha and they said it would do 33mph. I would think you would be somewhere in that range with what you have. |

| How fast was it with the 40 horse on it? I have that year and model, with a 50 2 stroke on it. Almost hits 32 (31.8)by myself, and averages just over 30 with 2 of us. I would guess you might hit 35 by yourself, but I'm curious myself.

| I run a Magnum 165 with a 60hp two stroke and top off at 31 fully loaded. |

| This is really disappionting. I can do 29 mph right now on my gps with the 40 horse by myself WOT with my regular gear. I am hoping to get more than a couple mph more with the 20 hp. increase. I was really hoping for 38-39 mph. I guess I may not be able to get that. I will look into a different prop too when they re-rig it. If anyone has more info or input, pleasse let me know.
Thanks, Tom |

| As a side note the 40 horse I have does 29mph with the motor moved up one hole on the mount. I originally could only get abot 26-27mph on the normal position so we raised it up one hole. I do hit 30 mph once in a while |

Location: Hayward, WI | I hate to crush any dreams, but I think 40 out of that boat is a long shot. I run a 2000 Navigator tiller with a 50 4 stroke, and can get 32 fairly empty, and about 31 loaded heavy or with another person. I knew a guy that had one with a 60 4 stroke, and he topped out at 34 with it. Pretty good sized guy, so a light load and a smaller person might maybe see 35 in perfect conditions, but I think that would be about it.
I know another guy with a Navigator with a 60 2 stroke console and he said he's getting about 32-33.
I think 34 is about all you can expect with a 165 maxed with a 60.

| Sounds like I just upgraded by 20 hp and may only get about 4 mph on the top end for speed. Man that makes me not too happy. I will see what they can do with a different prop. Thanks guys. |

Location: Hayward, WI | Well, yu never get into a tiller boat looking for it to be fast. As you know, the fishability is awesome. Also, even though you might one get 4-5 MPH better with the extra 20 hp, you might do a little better getting out of the hole, especially if you have another person or two with you and a full livewell. Also, you'll be able to cruise a little faster than you do now, or go the same speed at probably substantially lower RPMs. Top speed is far from the only benefit in upgrading the hp on a boat in my opinion. When I was looking for a Navigator, I wouldn't have considered one with a 40, would have snapped one up with a 60, and settled on a clean boat with a 50. If you ever sell it, resale will be much better, and you'll sell it a lot quicker having the motor maxed out.
I wouldn't be too disappointed with only picking up a few miles per hour.

| Curly,
Thanks for the help. The only reason I bought it with a 40 horse was that the price was GREAT and I was only 25 years old and my first boat. My reason for wanting more speed is because I fish a lake that has a channel access to another great lake that is pretty far away so, top speed is what I was looking to gain. You are right it will still be a great improvement with RPM's and the 4-5 mph I should get. I have never really cared about hole shot and have never really understood why it is such a big deal. Regardless, I will talk to the marina about prop options when they rig it. Thanks again, Tom |

Location: Hayward, WI | 53, I never worry about the few seconds of hole shot either as far as speed, but how the boat behaves is 'relatively' important. If you're by yourself and the weather is decent, a boat that comes out of the hole slowly doesn't really matter. But, but two more people in the boat and then get into big waves and you'll see why you want the boat to come out of the hole quicker. If you're plowing waves for a long time, everyone will be getting wet. I've never been in anything HUGE, but it sounds like if you're in really big waves, a boat that really struggles to get on plane can be somewhat dangerous.
For most uses, it's probably splitting hairs. Good luck with your new motor and enjoy the boat. My Navigator is my 2nd boat and I love it.

| Thanks again curley. You have been a great help. I wish I was talking about my Alumacraft Tournament 185 tiller instead! That is my next boat. It will have a 90 hp for sure.
Adding the 60hp to the 165 is all the wife will allow for now. Later, Tom |
