I usually take it under and proceed with the figure 8... or I'll do a long sweeping oval but I'll purposely pull the bait when I begin the 8.

leave it on top til its about 10 feet from the boat then take the bait down.. and sometimes taking it side to side changing directions helps too then go under before you get it to the boat.. the blade turning up a mean bubble trail under the water can make them nail it...bill
