Did a number on the prop and skeg on my 2004 Mercury 90hp 4 stroke last week. Called a local dealer and can get the skeg and prop repaired for around $500. Problem is, boat will be laid up for a week at least while fixing. Has anyone used one of the stainless steel Skeggard's? Saw them on the Cabelas website and it looks like it would be an easy install. Would still need to pick up a prop. Has anyone used one of these and how did it work for you? Should I bite the bullett and put the musky gear away for a week and get the dealer to repair or what?

I have one on my duck boat, with a Yamaha F50, because I chewed the skeg off. The question will be how much do you have left? They way they work is you need to drill 2 holes through is remaining and use an insert/sleeve on my side and a bolt on the other. Mine has been on there for a few years now and the boat gets a work out. Solid product.

LOTW took a chunk out of my dad's 9O Merc 4 stroke several years ago and he put on a skeggard. Worked just fine. It would still be working today if it wasn't sitting on the bottom of LOTW with the rest of the lower unit. ha.

I did the same thing on LOTW a couple of years ago to my 225 VMax, mangled the prop bad. Took the lower unit and the prop to a prop shop they did a great job on both, didn't think they would be able to fix the prop but it looks like new now. I think I only paid $250 or $300 for both, you may want to look into a prop shop for the repairs.

Thanks for the replys. I am going to get my old prop repaired and also purchase a new one since I don't currently have a spare. Skeg looks really rough but it is mostly just the front where it hit the rocks. Going to try the skeggard and see how it works. Don't really want to lay the boat up for a week while it is getting fixed.

If it's just chewwed up a bit, I'd say save the money, file things smoother, and be on your way...

I've got a Skeggard off of a 2002 Merc 225 EFI that I'll sell you cheap ($35 + shipping) if it fits. You'll have to buy new bolts.
