Ok, so the season is well underway, what are your thoughts on the Saltist Level wind reels? I might be interested in getting one for bigger baits such as pounders, cowgirls and the like.

It will be my next reel. Can't decide if I want the 20LW or 30LW? For burning bucktails and $180, and have'nt really heard any maintenance problems yet, a good reel at a good price. Mine will be for burning 10's until I find another ise for it.

Good reel, my lever quit engaging and it should be on its way back. I really like throwing SS shads with mine, kickin minnows, db 10's, dawgs.

I had the non levelwind last year and it was great but seemed to be a one trick pony with DCG's. I got the levelwind this year and find myself using it for cranks, dawgs, and smaller tails as well as the DCG's. Thinking about getting another, I have the 40 now but may try the 30 for my smaller lures. IMHO it is a great reel for the price.

The 30 is very comfortable to fish with by the way, easier to palm than a 7000 and lighter. I think the 20 would be a sweet reel as well.

I have had the 20LW out now a couple of days and love the reel. Had some backlash issues first with it, but took some line off and noticed that you really have to pay attention to the spool tension, and no backlashes since. With fish, the power is incredible. I was basically pulling fish in like nothing.

Well, I like what I hear so far. I will most likely pick up a 30LW pretty soon.

I picked up a 30 w/ levelwind at the MN Expo and the first night out it sounded really rough by the end of the evening. I got home and made a few calls and decided to open up the Left side plate - only 3 screws holding it on and oiled up the gears and levelwind.
I finally got back out on the water over the 4th of July week and it was quiet and smooth. The reel really smokes in the old Vibrax musky buck tandems. It pulled the Cowgirls nicely. I had no problem getting used to the lever. I was very concerned at first from the sound it was making. I don't have any concerns over the noise anymore. I think the reel will perform well for a long time.
I am sure there are many others that have much more time on there reels than mine.

I threw a Pounder for 3-4 straight hrs. yesterday, and The cowdussa for about an hr. The 30LW was very smooth......................... Cowgirls are easy with this reel.................But I'm sore as heck today.... At 53yrs old I need to stop thinking like an 18yr old.. I think I need another good Pounder Rod to lessen the soreness and pain.... Or maybe get in SHAPE !

Sorgy or Jerome, how does the 30LW compare in size to something like an Abu 6500 or 7000? Thanks for the help!

I think the 30 is a little smaller than an Abu 7000 C3. It is certainly more comfortable to palm than the 7000C3. I am trying to Break myself from palming the reels. Bob Turgon made some very good points in his seminar at Thorne Bros a few weeks back. I still cannot hold the rod like he does but I am still working on it.
I really liked the reel for the limited blades I threw over the 4th of July. I need to put my 7000 back on my other rod and throw DBl Cowgirls for a while just to see how much faster I am retrieving the bait with the 30. It does burn them in if you want but I bet burned pretty fast as well. I am using a 8'6" Allstar XH "trimmed" down to 8'3" but looking to upgrade to a 9' rod.

I cannot comment on the NON - Levelwind.
The model I have has the levelwind. The levelwind version is good for big blades, smaller blades, ripping crankbaits and dogs/swimbaits.
