I am in need of a reel that will handle a pounder all day a few times a week. I just don't feel that my Calcutta 400b is going to hold up to that kid of abuse very long. What do you guys use for them? No Abu Garcia reels though, too many bad experiences.

I dont think that is the Pounder's fault. The 400B is a fine reel for big plastics.

Otherwise go with a Garcia 7000, Shimano Calcutta 700, Tekota 600...

Try the TE. It has two anti-reverse features so if one fails, like on your 400b, it has a backup. I don't remember the name of the feature but it doesn't matter. Maybe SuperStopper II? I throw big plastics too and this was the only reel that has NEVER slipped, nor have I ever heard of a TE's anti-reverse feature(s) failing. That is why I now own 8 TEs. High Efficiency or (T otal E fficiency) gears make reeling in big bucktails, big rubber, and fish much easier. Plus you have a bulletproof anti reverse system, and they aren't big and cumbersome like many of the popular bigger reels now.

Good luck.

The SHIMANO TE CALCUTTA has a anti-rev bearing and a anti-rev pawl as a backup to the anti-rev bearing. Two things to watch out for when you are casting Big heavy baits, 1, - lob your cast so you don't backlash & 2, - if you rip your baits alot, use your thumb on the spool when you rip to help out the anti-rev system. I use a TE and a ABU 6600 reel that I have added a anti-rev pawl to backup the A/R bearing and this reel now has 9 bearings, 5 in the reel and 4 in the handle paddles and a stainless steel pinion & main gears. When you cast a 1-2lb baits, all reels will fail in time and the ABU are so easy to rebuild and you can buy all the parts you will need on EBAY for cheaps.

The 400B has the dual anti-reverse system like the te.

The 400B is a good reel BUT it has a plastic brake plate, and ONE backlash with a pounder and say good to your 400B. The 400TE frame is made with all solid bar stock aluminum.

I've got a 400B that's been my big plastic reel for 3 years and counting, no problems with it and I do a lot of ripping of them, enough so for bruised ribs...been using curado 300's as well since they have more line pickup, no problems with them either.

IMO calcuttas are one of the best muskie reels out there. And can handle anything from cowgirls to pounders so i think their a good reel
