My buddy is intersted in trying his luck chasing muskies with me. His preference is a spin casting reel. I'm not sure what direction as far as reels go! Are there any spincaster user's who can share what model's you prefer? Thank's

Todd

I have a okuma v system in the 60 size, I use it for tuna/sails and pitching live bait to fish on the surface. Ive caught tarpon with it- that would be plenty- imo for muskies a 4000/5000 size real would be plenty- I have a 4000 symetre and it has the same pound drag as my calcutta- I think there is someone on this forum that uses spinning gear exclusivley. the only problem he'll have is when he goes to throw heavy lures, I dont think it would be much fun holding the line with your fingers while lobbing 3 oz lures, I think it would be harder to find a good rod to pair with a reel- good luck

I know it seems to be against the norm for musky fishing... but I actually prefer spinning gear myself. I've not quite been able to make the jump or adjustment to a baitcasting outfit. *shrug* I've caught musky and I'm comfortable casting with spinning gear... but I do know it's out of the norm, so to speak.

M.T. are you talking about a spinning open faced reel or a sincasting reel which is a pushbutton(zebco 202) type of reel. Reason I ask is I have seen alot of posts over the years asking about a spincaster when they meant a spinning reel.

If it is a pushbutton reel you seek. Get a diawa, rhino or one of the nice quantum push button reels. The zebco pro-staff is a nice push button reel but not for musky. Put a braid on it. These reels i mentioned have a 4 to 1 retrieve. Retrieve speed is critical. The 33's 44's and 808's only have a 2 to 1 or 3 to 1 retrieve, not enough for lures.

Nice Spinning reels are Stradic 5000 or 6000 or the Daiwa Black Gold. We use those down in the keys for casting on the flats. Probably a good light saltwater reel would be good to go.

PSYS,
I wouldnt say that your out of the "Norm", U fish for ski's like the rest of us, I actually am thinking about picking up a spincaster for trolling, little bird gave me some set up advise using the spincasters, he is nothing but a trolling Guy, and uses them"quite successfully I might add" for trolling without any problems what so ever. his set up is unique if you ask me, he knows how much line he's putting out by marking his line at certain spots. i dont know whattype rods he uses but i do know he uses Shimano reels.

I have a Pflueger Medalist 6060 and a MH 7 ft rod. It is great for throwing big lures to pike. I haven't caught anything huge on it, but plenty of 30 inch pike to know it would hold up. It's a really smooth reel, 4.6:1 I think, but the spool and bail arms are so huge it brings line in quick. If you want a spincasting reel (push button) the zebco rhino has held up for hundreds of pike and bass. It was my second reel after my 33 broke and it has worked great for 10 years with the same 12 pound mono.
