Location: Ohio | I am new to this Muskie Hunting and I need a Casting Rod, I have been looking for a Shimano Compre CPC M80H Rod but it seems that everyone I contact is out of them. Is there a Rod out there that is comparable to this Rod that I can substitute for the Compre? one that is about the same in price ? I have a Calcutta 400B and the Baits I will be throwing is maybe 8 oz at the most. Thank You for any help |

Not to put you off but there are literally hundreds of posts on this and other sites that can give you suggestions. There are rods from $125-$375 bucks that will do the trick. Most all rod manufactures make a rod for that purpose. Youd be fine by choosing anything from a toothtamer, St Croix, shimano, g loomis and of course custom rods (and many I havent named). If you ask that question here youll get many different answers and in reality all of them will be right because thats what suits that person best.
Just get a rod that is a med/hvy to heavy action and a fairly fast tip and youll be fine.
Good luck |

Location: Eagan, MN | 8Ball --- don't worry, you can ask questions here. Honestly, muskie fishing is not rocket science and we aren't breaking any new ground here. We'll be talking about the same topics over and over again far into the future, so I don't agree w/ the previous poster on that.
Anyway, that Shimano runs about $120. Is that where you want to stay? Have you done enough muskie fishing that you have a pretty good idea of the lures you like to throw? Gives us a little more info and we'll be better able to help you. By the way, I've used that exact rod and it's pretty nice, Thorne Bros carries them and might have them in stock... www.thornebros.com |

Location: Latitude 41.3016 Longitude 88.6160 | 8Ball WELCOME I see you are new to this forum, How long have you been fishing for muskies ??? I will give you some idea's about a rod, the rod you are looking at is rated for 1 1/2 oz - 3oz baits only, so if you try to cast any mag dawgs or any baits over say 4oz your rod will not let you, one of the best rods on the market is the MUSKY INNOVATIONS BULLDAWG rods, Cabela's has them listed online, look at the 8' 1 1/2oz - 7oz or the 8' 2oz - 8oz is the one I would get, unless you are casting very small baits all the time. The M/I Bulldawg rods retail for $169.00, maybe you have some points with them or watch for a 10 -20 % off internet sale. Also Tica and Okuma make some 8 ft rods that retail about $130.00. If you have some time do a search on rods and you will find alot of info here on M/1st forum. My father always said there is no dumb ?? but alot of dumb answers !!!

Location: Medford, WI | 8ball, I have a brand new (still in the plastic wrap) Tica 8'6 XH Musky Rod. If you're interested, I'd sell it to you cheaper than what Rollie & Helens or Thorne Bros. has it for. It's a great rod, I just have an 8' Compre and these rods are very similar so I just decided to not start using this one right away. It would throw the same baits the Compre would and the rod is telescoping which is very nice for storage and transporting. If you're interested, please let me know.
Thanks, Jake Bucki |

Thank You PIKEMASTER, well thank you to everyone.
Above is kind of what I was looking for, a Rod that is similar to the Compre for about the same money.
On the Baits I would be throwing, probably no bigger than Bikini TurmoilX or a Weighted Sledge, if I ever used a Bulldawg it would more than likely be Trolling, of course things may change down the road but that is the plan around here anyway.
This is why I was thinking of going with the Heavy and not the Extra Heavy Rod.
Would it be harder to cast 2 - 3 oz Baits with an Extra Heavy Rod?
WHat happens if you cast 8 - 12 oz Baits with just a Heavy Rod? will the extra weight and Whip break the Rod ?
Thank You all very much |

Location: Latitude 41.3016 Longitude 88.6160 | Get the rod that you need NOW and down the road you can get a XH rod for some BIG baits, since most of your baits are small go with the rod that works for them, and if you have to cast a bait that is a bigger just lob cast them and should be fine. |

Location: Ohio | I am in Ohio but I have a Buddy that lives right outside of Mattoon and I use to go over every year Bow Hunting and he came over here a few times.
He is a pretty well known Bow Hunter in that area and has quite a few Big Deer under his belt.
Last time I was over there in 1999 or so, we went past Lake Shelbyville but never did any fishing there, or anywhere in Illinois |
