| Hi all, first time poster here. Wifey and I are new to the Chippewa Falls area and are looking to hit the water on Wissota in the future. I'm a fairly "green" musky hunter outside of my home area. Looking for any good areas or pointers on Wissota that anyone may have. I haven't been out on the lake before and the only other pointers co-workers gave me were for walleyes / smallies. Thanks! |

I go to school in Eau Claire and have gone out on Wissota 3 or 4 times over the past two years so I don't have a whole lot of experience but I can give you a few good spots. I'm sure there are others who can help you out more than I can on here.
One of the best spots for us was the east end of Little Lake Wissota; right by the Marina. There's lots of weeds in there. Also, there are quite a few spots in Little Lake Wissota that you'll be able to find in a days time. Another good weed spot is between the point and the island in the Northeastern portion of the lake (where the Yellow River comes in). Both up the Yellow River and Chippewa River will also give you good chances at muskies/other species. Right before you hit the Yellow River from the main lake, there's a big weed flat off of the west side of the point right where the Yellow River starts.
I'm not sure what the water looks like this time of the year as I've only fished it in early and late fall. At those times, we've moved fish on surface baits and bucktails. Remember that trolling is also an option out there which could be a great way for you to learn some of the water in a quicker fashion.
Good luck, let me know when you get some fish and PM me if you have any other questions.

Location: Hayward, WI | I've fished Wissota quite a bit. My number one spot many days was the Yellow River Bar - the big (huge) weed flat that Medford Fisher talked about. I would run the edge along the river channel, take that out a long ways until you hit the point/end of it that tapers slowly. You can fish it all the way around, but the side closest to the island never seemed quite as good. Make sure to fish up on the very top of it too, especially if there is a big line of boats (don't worry, a big line would be 2 or 3 other guys) fishing only the edge.
There is a weedline on the shoreline behind yellow river bar that runs along the State Park. Fish can be had along there, and it also seems like a good area to troll (careful of the wood - bring a lure retriever). Larsons bar can be good too. Lots of stuff in the little lake.
I usually stuck to fishing the shallow weeds out there, which meant I caught fish early in the year, and then again after the water started cooling down in late August/early September. The big weed flats can be AWESOME in September into October. I used a lot of bucktails/spinnerbaits and topwater. Some guys use jerkbaits too, but I saved them for the little bit I fished there later in fall.
Some guys troll and catch fish doing it, but I never tried it much out there. I think to catch fish during the warm-water summer months that you would almost need to troll.
I would get a Hot Spots map and check it out. Lots of good spots to fish on Wissota. If you need any more specific help send me a private message.

Location: Hayward, WI | By the way, you'll catch a lot of fish out there in the mid to high 30's, but bigger fish are certainly around. The last year I fished it hard I caught a 44, 45, and 46, along with a couple in the low 40's. Have heard of a few upper 40's and some 50's out of there each year too.
Good luck out there.

| Thanks all for the replies! I'm looking forward to heading out and hitting up a few of these spots. I think I'm going to have to find some weeknight time as it sounds like Wissota is a pretty busy rec lake in the summer on weekends. If anything good happens, I'll be sure to report back. |
