| I've never been one to worry much about the moon phase in regards to when to fish as I believe that anytime I can get out fishing is a good time. But I am now planning a trip to Canada and the dates are pretty much open, just sometime in August and since I can pick any dates I was thinking of going when the moon phase is supposed to be at it's best. The problem is I don't know what moon phase is supposed to be best.
Given the choice would you prefer to fish around the full moon, new moon, last quarter of first quarter? |

Location: Oswego, IL | Full moon SET is supposed to be the ticket. Although a few days before and then after seem to be good as well. Problem is, unless you plan on fishing at night, you will not be out on full moon SET around the times your there, when i am going July 3rd, freaking full moon SET is either late late Pm or early early Am. May have to work something out with the old timers I am going with. Weather is also KEY. |

Location: SE, WI. | Typically, IMO the full moon is a better time for big fish, while new moon seems to produce more #'s of fish. My suggestion is to be on the water and on your best spots prior to when moon is rising or setting!  It also seems like the bigger bodies of water have a stronger effect to catching fish on the rise and setting of the moon.  |

Location: Sw Pennsylvania | I keep pretty good track of the moon in regards to fishing not just musky but other species. I without a doubt in my mind love the full moon 3 days before and 3 days after, i'm almost always getting some sort of activity on these days. New moon is a close second also 3 before and 3 after. Pay attention to moonrise and moonset along with sunrise and sunset. Most of my activity comes on these periods of the day. Weather plays a big a hand also and generally trumps the moon phase IMO, but if you can fish get on the water on these days! |

Location: c.wis | if you do some searching on muskie hunter/larry dahbergs forum/in fisherman/game and fish mag- there are some good explinations on the whole solunar bit- some real interesting reading- some have compiled info for 20 yrs and have reported on there findings- most of the basics have been mentioned- do some homework and look over the tables and youll have a pretty good idea what is going on- it all can be variable due to cold fronts/ect... but most times there pretty accurate- this years walleye opener for me was case in point pb- eye and pike within two hours- I studied the carts and picked the best 4 hours to fish- funny to cause the rest were getting soaked all night into the morn- good luck |

Location: Birchwood, WI. | last year 1st week augest, me& my buddy went out for our first time for the night bite on sabaskong bay (lotw) moon set was around 10.30 . we started casting at 7:00 & our first fish was boated at 7:04! a 43". we fished until 12:30. during what we could see, we raised 5 and ended up boating that 43" 41" 44.5" 45.5" 47.5" & a 40.5" MOON SET!!!! we ended up with 19 boated , biggest 51.5" for the week!! try moon set . i want to say it was a new moon phaze that week!! |

Location: NE Ohio | Reports from a Ohio local lake last Thurs & Friday were definately right around Moonrise (roughly 4:20 pm) 2 days before the full moon on Sunday.
Guys were getting fantastic action between 4 & 6 two days in a row...... While I mowed my lawn!  |

I planned an entire season around the new moon and full moon a few years back. Worst season for #'s since I started fishing. As for Canada? Well... If the muskie season is open and the water isn't frozen it's a good time to be fishing in Canada! |

| In 12+ years of fishing north of the border, my best week for numbers and size was during neither a full moon or new moon phase....likewise, on that trip, none of our catches corresponded with a moon event.
Our results overall have been across the board in terms of moon periods....the fact is that your success will be mostly determined by the prevailing weather events during the week you are there.
Personally, I like later in Aug for not much other reason than the fact that boating and fishing traffic will be on the decline the closer you get to Labor Day. |

Location: Houlton, WI | new moons and full moons, theres somthing in a muskys brain that drives them crazy during a full moon, since it is august, fish at night using topwater.

Location: Kronenwetter, WI | Interestingly enough, if I'm planning a trip to heavily pressured water, I actually AVOID booking over the moon phases. I made that mistake once and it was literally combat fishing. North of the border, you should be fine. |

Location: Oswego, IL | I hope CBH its like the lastime I went, although I went for Ontairo opener on LOW, which is kinda wierd I only saw two- three other anglers the entire week I was there while fishing. I think the week I am going this year may be good as well because its the 4th of July weekend I start, and get the entire week,(week days are my favorite) hopefully with the holiday thing and all pressure wont be an issue, not to mention there is plenty of water for everyone there. |

Location: Hayward, WI | If I was planning a trip and I wanted to do the majority of my fishing during daylight hours I would pick the full moon, since the moon will be down most of the day. I have caught some fish with the moon up, but I almost always have better days with the moon down.
Also, my first personal best fish 2 years ago was caught in July after moonset of the full moon, and my previous best last year was within minutes of moonrse during the full moon. Small sample size, but maybe it means something.
Anyway, I would decide what time of day you plan on fishing, and then schedule the trip so the moon will be down for the majority of the time you are fishing.

Location: Indiana | It always seems to me that daytime fishing during a full moon phase sucks whereas overnight the fishing is great...and vice versa, fishing daytime hours during new moons is awesome whereas overnight the fishing can be tough. Anyone else have similar results?
