All you hardcores please don't harass me on this. I fish musky's roughly 10-15 hours per week. I have noticed that lately when I bring my lure close to the boat I almost see myself leaning back almost scared to see what is behind my lure. I have had some psychotic hits next to the boat in the past few years including a low to mid 50" follow my lure after a figure 8 half way into the boat. I think I feel like the next boatside strike/follow could be my last (heartattack)J/K. Talking to a friend the other day he says he does the same so I know there are others out there. Do anyone have any tips on ways to keep your snout in the water watching behind your lure without being half scared. Maybe I need to find a different sport.

Maybe just realize the fish isnt after you, just your bait........... I dont want to be mean but maybe you should NOT fish for muskie because if you are afraid of them in the water how the heck are you going to safely land the fish and let it go?

I have no problem with the handling and releasing part or the figure eight part when the fish are not comming at you like a psychotic beast from hell. Just the initial staring behind a lure for hours on end and then WHAM!!

I know what you are talking about. This mostly happens to me when I am not expecting a musky at the time, those times when you are not really paying attention and just casting to cast.

But hey, thats musky fishin !!

the next time you feel scared just punch something, its what i do to solve all of my problems. And remember, muskies are 1000 times more scarred of you then you should be of it. My next suggestion is to try therapy or hypnotism. If you feel its nessicery.

All great replies. I have no problems with anything besides the absolute psycho fish. It sounds like everyone else is the same or they are complete psycho's themselves. Just looking for a trick or tip for those fish that come from under the boat or from out of nowhere on your second trip through the figure eight or as you are pulling lure out of water. I guess if that doesnt freak you out a little you are not human, which alot of muskie guys are not.

Just expect to see fish every retrieve and you' ll get used to occasionally not seeing a fish behind every cast. As long as you're scared and not afraid you'll probably be all right. Scared uses adrenaline and gets you going and afraid uses urine to give you that warm feeling. I'm a big fan of two pair of underwear until the afraid passes. good luck

Kinda off subject, but I had a low 40's fish follow on a 8" nitro that had about a 2 foot piece of cabbage on it this weekend. That was weird.

It's completely different....

sometimes they just pop up without giving you a warning and you just don't expect it, It's happened to me. I like to see a follow a little ways from the boat and be ready for it but when they just come unexpected that just gets me jumpy sometimes! It's fun too.

Having a fish on and then netting the fish is different, because I'm ready for it and relaxed but pumped/excited about it.

Yep. One thing you will do with experience is see them coming ALOT further off. that will help...alittle.

Do you have a small boat? I used to have a small boat and was scared of the same thing because I was basicly right on the water with the fish. I now have a bigger boat and I am not scared at all. Now I want one to come out of knowhere and cream my bait.

Im not scared of the fish, its more of just a surprise when a musky hits at boatside when your not expecting it. But it is the reason i musky fish. I love thinking that such a large fish can come out of no where and attack your lure right under your feet!! Even though it may make me jump and get my heart beating really fast, thats why i do it. Personally i LOVE the freaky follows/strikes lol.

First one i remember that got me hooked on ESOX was when i was about 8 and was dangling a spoon over the side of the boat saying "here fishy, fishy" and the next thing i know i see a flash and feel the weight of a pike, it was pretty exciting for me at the time. now that i found out how exciting musky fishing can be ill never stop lol

Not weird at all. Ulbian and I raised the same 47+ inch fish two times in the same night on weed covered baits. Fish love the weed pattern. We actually developed a shallow and depth raider to run correctly with some plastic aquarium plants glued to the front of the bait.

I have to say I also love the crazy follows more so because of the adrenaline rush that follows. I will admit though I often jump or am startled by quick strikes and it doesnt have to only be muskies pike get me a lot also even the small ones. I prefer the ones that you simply don't have time to react to though, you just scream holy **** and hope it doesn't end in DID you see that?

Muskie fishing is like a jack in the box...

You sit there turning that crank, waiting, knowing that eventually a big ugly thing is going to come flying out of there and scare the crap out of you. And it does, every single time... But somehow you still can't help turning that #*^@ handle anyway...

Have you guys gotten the one where you do a figure 8 after a cast a couple times through and just when you are pulling it out of the water the muskie comes screaming from under the boat? That one really freaks me out.

I got hung up in a tree and when the bait came out I just cranked it back to the boat as fast as I could with no eight...... next thing I know , I thought a torpedo was gonna take me out !!!! Lesson learned "again"

If you want to soil your shorts try Night Fishing, you won't see a follow but a boat side strike by a 50 incher or any size for that matter can scare the poop out of anyone

I guess I am a bit different because A. I always expect a follow B. I get excited, not freaked out C. Besides landing one, thats one of my favorite things about muskie - the JAWS follow. D. Fear no fish! - unless you are swimming with sharks.
I think your not freaked out, but overly excited, which is good and will keep you fishing.

Last friday was first time I can see a muskie follow little further away before spooked off. Last year I had maybe 20s "scared the hell out of me" follows right at boatside. Alway scared the crap out of me. Its like "OH SHIIII....THERE'S MUSKIE RIGHT F%^&^%$# THERE!" Heck I had one shoot the head out of water after showgirl. I think I had discard 6 or 7 underwear last summer although I admit I hate when they appeared out of nowhere but at sametime I love it.
But this year I finally got my ass up n build the casting deck on my boat.. So that way I can speed up or slow down my retrieve to trigger the muskie that's followin further way..

I love it when I get a hit next to the boat... The adrenalin rush is amazing. Its almost better then catching it.

guess its something you just have to get use to.

If you're afraid of them when you're in the boat you probably shouldn't fish for them while wading. I've had fish run into my leg chasing a bait. Now that will get your heart going.

My first follow of my life was on a double prop topwater when I was a teenager. Back then, I didn't know to figure 8 and I didn't see the follow. When I lifted the lure from the water, the fish jumped clean out of the water right at me and almost jumped into the boat. I was totally freaked!

Even in that extreme scenario, the fish didn't stay airborne very long and certainly could not have hurt me.

All of us have a part of our brain that is scared of being eaten by a sea monster. But a musky is not a sea monster. So, "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself" (Franklin D. Roosevelt).

I had one come 6 feet out of the water after my bait when I wasn't paying attention and lifted it out to start another cast. It was my first time muskie fishing. I didn't get the fish, but it got me! That's what started my love affair with these beasts.
The only time I get worried about being scared by a fish anymore is at night. Even after doing a number of figure 8's I am worried when I take the lure out of the water, for fear that it will explode in the dark at my feet. I love it. Does that make me a masochist?

I think we have all had muskies do unexpected things, that can be a little heartstopping. I have had them come in so fast on a follow they smack the side of the boat with their tail when they turn, I had a small undersize musky take to the air and clear the bow of the boat once, but the key to all this is to always anticipate the follow, and with more experience you can see the fish following from a ways out. That not only lessens the need to change pants so often, but also will significantly increase your conversions of those following fish, because you can respond tactfully to his level of aggression and further anticipate his moves. Now nightfishing, thats a whole other ballgame. I still get jumpy when the water explodes 30 feet out from the boat.

Last night a buddy and I were shallow water bass fishing with senkos and spinning gear and he hooked into his first muskie, a mid 30" fish.

The fish quickly broke his line and then the fish threw it in my buddy's face by not moving from where he was hooked. It was almost like he was saying, "here I am, is that the best you got???"

I tried a new method of trying to get a following fish to bite a few years back. Instead of a figure 8, pull the lure out of the water and yell "FISH!!!" and point at the following fish. I will admit that hooking percentage is quite low, but the others in the boat will really get a some excitement. Should I charge for this kind of insight?

Oh boy, you gotta R_E_L_A_X!

Musky fishing is like a good Hitchcock movie. The suspense keeps building and building. You know something is going to happen, but when and what? The more you get into it the bigger the shock when out of nowhere the beast appears. That's a big part of the fun! Just relax and enjoy! If you take that out of the equation, you lessen the experience.

If you want the ultimate shocker get out there on a really moonless night and throw topwater over some prime spot. When you get one to smoke it 6" from the boat, all you see is water flying, fish skying eye high, and hear a shriek of terror that would raise the dead. Now that's intense!

this is why I almost ,I said alsmost give up deer hunting for because it is the same addrinalin flow that I get hunting but when I get that fish on I can put it back ,wish I could do that with deer. That rush I'm telling you right now if you lose that knee nocking sensation when you see hogzilla come up, you better just fish for bass .This is what I live on the lake for everytime I go out!!!!!The release and follows (sometime s)are beter than the catch .good hunting

I remember when I was younger and just beginning to fish for Musky--I would have basically the same feeling. You will get over it and will look forward to the followers and boatside explosions. I love the figure 8 fish and now after a few years of fishing for them ( 20 years ) I can;t wait for the next fgloow and boatside strike. GOOD LUCK and enjoy it!!!!!!!
