Looking for some input on which reel to buy. Using to pair with a St Croix sling blade and throw double 10's, big glides, etc.

Luna won't last the season so stay away from those, in fact I'm taking one to the post office this morning to send off for warranty....for the fifth time. Saltists are nice but I had a hard time keeping it from backlashing, had better luck with the Trinidad. Right now I'm using a TE with a power handle for 10's and really like it.

I bought the Saltist 20 Levelwind this winter and have had it out now and it is a perfect reel for double 10's. You have to be on top of the spool tension and smaller lures will cause you problems. It's a tank for tank sized lures and it is bulit to handle them. The reel feels like no other, solid.

The luna will work if your not wantin to burn 10's. I have the luna on my sling blade and love it. I have not had any problems from it and i am throwin 10's, rippin mag dawg and throwin gliders with it.

I own both, the Luna is solid and I used it alot last year. The anti reversed slightly slipped on one hookset but still got it in. The Saltist is whole level up. But its bigger and heiver and not even as close to comfortable to the Luna (to me). It reels the 10's in like a dream though and u can really burn them if u want. Both reels are also great for the doggies IMO

Saltist are fine for CGs if you want to bring them in medium to slow speed. you have to work reel hard and will get tired easily trying to get alot of speed with them though. The reel wont burn em, only you will burn.

Slow, I dont get it? Saltist for medium to slow? you have to work to move them? I have to disagree on that personally. I have one, and thinking you may not. How do you figure slow, when at least my 40 is 40+ inches of line per turn, these things bulge the water behind them they move so fast. And most have to weight it to keep it down it can go that fast. Maybe I am not getting this right but the saltist I have move them easily even fast and doesnt burn me out, what would will be a small diameter spool cranking as fast as possible, but my saltist doesnt do that.

guess it depends on what you mean by "burning". i like to think of it as almost reeling as fast as possible w/ a high speed reel, where that lure is really moving fast. i can really burn small bucktails w/ the saltist no problem, but 10s or bigger i can only get a medium speed and fatigue quickly. i bought the salitst to generate ALOT of speed w/ 10s and it doesnt do it. i dont know if any reel out there would be able to really high speed burn those 10s? it doesnt have the cranking power, it has the line pick up.

I think you bought the wrong saltist then slow rollin. I have to work to keep the 10s from blowing out of the water w/ my 40H and that's w/ the added weight I built them w/. I think it's rated for around 47" per crank which is the most I've seen and is not nearly the work out my abu 7000 put me through last summer. That being if I wasn't looking for a specific tool to burn 10s w/, I wouldn't have gotten the reel b/c a) its huge and b)if I were to get one of the smaller saltists, there is probably a comperable size reel that is just as good and does not need to be manually engaged after every cast.

Raft, which one did you get the high speed or the lower gears 40? I got the highspeed 40+ line retrieve, and I can get them cooking. This is the only reason i got it to burn and buldge them. Got other reels to slow them down on.
Slow, Too much line wouldnt be an issue if anything your getting more ft per crank (faster) Something isnt right.

Slow Rolling,
I have a 30 Saltest and if I reel fast the DCG comes out of the water with no problem. It will pick up 36" of line per crank and is built like a tank., I can palm it and it works real good with other Big Lures. The 40 is bigger and heaver but will pull the DCG's even easer than the 30.

The Luna that I have is also a good reel, smooth and easy to use. But don't throw Pounders,DCG, 13" Jakes, ect with it.

its 6:4:1........ only thing i can think of is take some line off. i talked to a few others that have em and they said the samething after using them for the first time this yr and it was agreed that you can't really burn em. but can only reel them at a decent pace comfortably.

The more line that is on the spool, the faster the lure will pull through the water, with less effort,......And I'm a Blonde....... Ok, Silver.

With the increased line pickup of the big saltwater reels you can reel at a "decent" pace and still burn the tail.

That is the beauty of these reels...you don't need to reel like maniac to get the speed.

I can't imagine the Saltist isn't fast enough?? I have the 40 and if I really get on it I can't keep it from blowing out. Try throwing a DCG on a 6600 for awhile and then go back to your 40, that should make you feel better.LOL
