Location: Stillwater | I'm looking to get a reel for DCG, mag dawgs, big bladed bucktails and other heavy stuff. I want to get a reel for under $200 I was thinking like the record or the okuma induron. And I wanted to ask what you guys like? Would you rather have the record over the induron or vice versa? And why? WHich one should I get?

Location: Ogden, Ut | I have both reels you mentioned. Either will pull double 10s...for a while. I think the Induron will pull them longer before it fails. It seems that the Record might be slightly smoother, but the Induron sits lower on the reel seat and is more comfortable for my hands. I feel that since it's less expensive, the Induron is a bit better value. Also, Okuma customer service is exemplary. If I had to choose between the two, I'd get the Induron.

| The record holds the record for the least amount of time I've ever used a reel before it stopped working, and the one they sent me to replace it wasn't much better. I've not used the Induron, but based on what I've seen and hear about Mark's customer service I would choose the Induron. Why? Well, customer service is important, and it can't possibly be any worse than the two records I had unless it doesn't work when you take it out of the box... |

Record, not made for those things IMO.
Induron, I cannot comment on.
I will tell you what your looking for, EVERYONE on here is also looking for. Not much had made the grade for those baits yet, a lot of good reel out now, but to early to tell if they will hold up. And price range, not to many there either, besides the Saltist- IMO. |

Location: In a shack in the woods | I have never tried either but have had bad experiances with abu's. Everything I've heard about the saltist and okuma have been good. I use a shimano tekota 600 and torium 14. I like both alot, but as muskiewhored stated. I haven't used them long. Less than 40 hrs on each. Torium is a nice reel to palm but the tekota pulls dbl 10's like they are not even there. I think either the shimano's, okuma, or saltist would be your best bet In that price range |

I've been using my old 7000s for dcgs for the past few years, and while none have failed yet the noise they started making last year was not good. I just bought a trinidad 14 ($300) and we'll see how it holds up. I really don't expect it to be any faster than a 7000 but hopefully it can take the abuse. |

Location: Oswego, IL | Billy B, I would agree and disagree with you on the Record. Agree- Do not throw any 10s or big dawgs. Disagree it isnt a muskie reel. The record is fine for the smaller bucktails, and fine with topwater (depending on size as well) and fine for gliders/jerks within reason of size as well. I use mine for all of which I just said and have no problems. Use and abuse kills reels. I am smart enough to not be the test dummy on any of my gear, hense, I also have a toro60 I dont use for 10s yet either i got a saltist for that, maybe next year though, Time will Tell! |

Location: Antioch, IL | I would advise staying away from any reels that do not have a one piece frame. The amount of pull and pressure the larger baits put on a reel will cause and welded areas to flex, which in turn causes the gears to run out of line. You will burn them up fast. One piece frame for sure. After that consider the gear ratio. (Think in terms of a ten speed bike) Lower ratio means easier to turn, but more turns to move the bait. High ratio means harder to turn the handle, but faster line pick up. This question has been beat to death on this board. Take the 3 to 4 top suggestions that always come up on this topic and go try them out at the store (even better ask to toss a friends if you get the chance) See what feels good to you. |

| I've got a Cardiff 301 (one size down from the 400 series) that I use strictly for small bucktails and spinnerbaits. It was my first muskie reel, and henceforth it took a LOT of abuse from stopping baits mid cast with the reel, bad backlashes, etc. It's still going strong and I have no complaints. It's not as smooth or quiet as it once was, but after what I put it through my first season or two, I am honestly surprised it works at all.
For pulling double 10's? Probably not a good choice. I've used a 7000 Abu for them in the past, and now I have a Penn 975 that I've used for two seasons pulling double 10's, and I love it. Generally speaking, you are probably better off with a reel that has a bit lower gear ratio - in the 4.5:1 range, a big spool, and a power handle. |

| SS gearing isn't necessarily all that great. They can seize on you if they're overworked or not maintained properly. But they are very hard relative to brass.
I'd say your best bet is to check out Ebay for an old 7000. Make sure it says "Made in Sweden" on the side and is in good condition. It'll pull DCGs for years even if you don't take care of it. Take care of it and it'll last forever. |

Location: Latitude 41.3016 Longitude 88.6160 | Small dia. brass gears will not hold up pulling in DCG10-13, PENN reels the 965 and the 975 have S.STEEL GEARS, U don't here alot of PENN gears going bad like U do in the ABU 6500 small brass gears reels, U have to grease any gears or they will not hold up. Give me a set of S.STEEL gears anyday over brass gears for reeling in DCG10-13, I have a S.STEEL pinion gear for my ConQuest 400 that I have used for 2 years burning DCG 10-13 and is still fine, a brass one would not hold up. |

Location: Oswego, IL | This post began at a HEAVY DUTY reel for under $200. Again, for what you are looking to do with it, I would really suggest taking a look at saltwater reels, go to a local store even if you are not going to buy from them, just to hold and feel it, maybe bring the rod you are planning on using it with also to get the effect. |
