Let's beat this to death again guys . . . been having problems with Power Pro. Not sure if I got a bad batch or what. I am thinking about making a switch to Suffix. Does anyone have any complaints except the price? I have heard people say bad things about Power Pro and Spiderwire, but not about the Suffix braid. Final question, how much line do you generally put on your reels? I've been told everything from 50 to 100 yards. Thanks!

I have been throwing Power Pro for a couple years now and have had no problems with it. (except in Alaska when a huge king to me for a ride down the deshka river, i have never seen line "pop" like that, but i think it was caused by the reel as it appeared the line had crossed over itself and under the pressure of the fish's run it cut itself. It was an awesome fight while it lasted.) What kind of problems are you having?

I have not ever really heard anything bad about Suffix Braid. One thing to keep in mind when you hear people talk bad about SpiderWire it's ussually about the original SW that came out 15 or so years ago and has been discontinued for 5 or 6 years. You don't really hear anything bad about the current Stealth or Ultra Cast lines.

I actually just spooled up my trinidad w/ 80lb suffix. Won't have a chance to cast it until this Sat. I mostly use spiderwire stealth, and a little tuf line and power pro. The suffix is not as thin as stealth of the same test, but it's more round and very stiff (at least until the coating wears off). What problems have you been having w/ power pro?

I've read a lot of people complaining about PowerPro, which I have never had any problems with, so I thought maybe I was missing out on something. So I now have my reels spooled with one of the following: PowerPro, Suffix, Spiderwire Ultracast, and Rapala Superbraid. I have absolutely no preference between PowerPro and Suffix. I do like the Spiderwire slightly more though, it seems to do what is says, it casts ultra smooth but maybe its just the reel. I tried the Rapala Superbraid because it is $10 cheaper than the competition. Initially, it is extremely stiff and I didn't like it but after a few hours on the water it get more supple and I only like it slightly less than PowerPro. All in all, todays superbraid are 1000x better than the old braided dacron so I always find it funny when people complain. Braided dacron scored like a 3/10 and todays superbraids all score between a 9.5 and 10. Just my 2 cents.

What problems are you having? If the line is frayed I hear power pro will send you a new spool.

I'll cast a vote for Spider Wire Stealth. I've used it for years and never had an issue, 80lb.

I know there were/are spools of Power Pro for sale on eBay that are conterfeit, did you buy your spool from there? These spools came from China and were low quality stuff.

I tried sufix performance braid and absolutly love it. Casts like a dream and is very very strong. Doesnt knot up on itself like power pro. Trust me, get the sufix!

When you put line on, start with a lot then if its to much cut some off.

I've used Powerpro, Cortland Spectron, Masterbarid Bronzeback, Tuff Line, and a few others.

I never had any "problems" with Powerpro until I started using Cortland products and realized that not all line gets fuzzy right away, not all line is noisy going through your guides, and not all line breaks as easily or backlashes as easily as Powerpro. It works just fine, does what it's supposed to do, and I wouldn't say there is anything WRONG with it, but... It's definitely not the best line IMO.

As always guys, thank you for the fast and informative replies. The Power Pro I was using kinda came unwound and backlashed all the time. Now I'm not a pro but I have been fishing for over 20 years. I bought it from a local "mom and pop" tackle shop that went out of business. Don't know if it was "counterfit" or not. They were in business for quite a while. Sold out and moved to Tennessee to be with their kids. How about the amount of line on a reel. As I said, I have been told everything from 50 to 100 yards.

I used to put a few turns of mono on my reels and spool up the rest of the way with braid. Then I got smart and started flipping the line each season, because most of the braid had never even been off the spool. This year I finally got really smart! (this is a pain in the butt, but it's something you only need to do once)

Step one: I measured off 50 yards (150 feet) of braid, and wound it onto an empty reel.

Step two: I tied mono to the braid and filled up the spool the rest of the way with mono.

Step three: I tied the end of the mono (that was on the outside of that reel) onto another reel, and reeled from one to the other.

Now, what I have is just enough mono backing on that reel to allow for 50 yards of braid on the outside. Changing line from now on should be a piece of cake. 50 yards at a time, 150 yards on a spool, each spool can do three reels.

The only problem with my approach is you need an empty reel to wind the line on, with approximately the same capacity as the reel you are filling.

Power Pro sucks, I wouldn't use it if they gave it to me. JMHO

I love the Cortland Spectron, it's the best I have used.

As far as the Suffix goes, a buddy bought some the other day and it seems very tough.

How much to put on a reel?? I normally put about 75 yards on, it just seems to work out that way. I can do two reels from a 150 yd spool.

I tried PPro once..never again...
Spiderwire stealth or Cortland Bronzeback in 80 lb.
I put on about 150 feet ..a lonnng cast might be 100 feet so 150- is plenty..no need to put on 100's of yards ...waste of money and line

Esoxaddict, that is a pretty slick idea - much more idiot proof. I went the route of doing math and compensated (i.e. guestimated) for various in line size of the mono & braid relative to spool advertised capacity for a given line # rating. Actually came pretty close.

For measuring the amount of line, I used a detachable line counter and ran the line on the reel going through with it turned backwards.

I guess the easiest way would be to have all the reels with the same line and buy the line in bulk so you don't have to worry about wasting much of the spool. Fortunately, all my new reels were spooled for free at the MN Musky Expo, so won't have to worry until next season. It was a great ... They were spooling Suffix Braid, Spiderwire Stealth, and I think Fireline Braid for FREE with any reel purchased at the show.

Ive tried many types of braid and nothing is better than suffix. Power pro knots up on its self and freys. Get 65 Pound suffix performace braid. When i spool my reel and put like 115 yards. Ive learned over the years that the more you put on the more backlashes you get. Well thats my opinion.

I'll add one more vote for SpiderWire Stealth. I was using PowerPro. After switching to Stealth, I've found it doesn't fray as quick, it's quieter, and the coating is more durable so it doesn't soak in as much water. Also, (as said previously) it doesn't wind up on itself like PowerPro.

I tried the ultracast invisibraid in 80# and it's like using rope IMO. very big diameter. Other than that it seems o.k.
