My drag went out the first day. I fished with it all day no problems. I always loosen my drag at the end of the day. So after i loosened it i noticed it was too loose so i tightened it up a bit and it noticed it didn't tighten up. So i tighten it up even further and same thing. So today i bring it back to Gander and the manager of the fishing dept said you should not tighten the drag down all the way on these reels. "They aren't made to do that". I said well Abu Garcia is not marketing the reel like that....this is marketed as a heavy duty muskie and salt water reel...and i said ALOT of muskie guys are buying this reel and most of them lock the drag down...even though i don't i know alot of you do. So anyways he replaced the reel with a new one. Always excellent customer service at Gander!!! I know some of you have used this reel for awhile now...have you guys been locking them down and had any trouble?

Do you mean the star drag kept spinning continuously without tightening? Or did it tighten up but line was still pulling out?

If the later, I'll ask the obvious...

Did you put backing on the reel? Either mono or tape?

The drag did tighten down all the way but line was still easily pulled out...the same light tension no matter what setting. And yes i put both mono backing and it's taped...i took all the line off as it was brand new Suffix and double checked it.

I don't know how the "ceramic" drag inside this reel works but it's almost like by cranking down the drag you are smashing down on washers that might be concaved slightly and it straightens them out and dont work anymore...not saying thats what happened but thats what it feels like.

And yes i like Ganders customer service. I've brought in a guide series rod that was a year old...and i cut the butt end of the rod down short...and the front most guide had broken...not sure how...and he walked over to the rack and handed me a brand new rod!!! And when that rod lost the ceramic insert a couple months later they replaced that one also.

I have been using the Toro since opening day of for Southern WI (May 2nd) and I have had the drag locked down most of that time, I haven't had any problems whatsoever.
