I am thinking about getting a Revo Toro 61 to replace my 3-4 year old 5602(right number?) that I have used for bucktails. I want to throw more Double Cowgirl type bucktails than I have in the past but really don't want to get a reel like a Saltist that sounds like a specialized reel just for that use. I want more of a all-around reel that can be used some of the time to burn a cowgirl. I know this reel has not been out too long, so probably no one knows for sure,I'm just asking for opinions. Also, my hands are smaller, so I think a low profile reel would be nice. I throw a lot of jerkbaits and I have a 6500C4 that I use for that. When that pukes out, I probably will try a 61HS to replace that. Back to the 61, what $100-$200 rod would work with the Cowgirls. Is it realistic that this reel and potential rod could do a decent job of throwing small bucktails to large Cowgirl type? Thanks!

I dont think ANYONE knows for sure what will happen with the Toro, its a great reel per specs. Im usre by the end of the season everyone will know whats what with it. I have one myself, but am afraid to consistantly throw 10's yet.

$100-$200 rod, try to get a good one 8'6 or longer, you may have luck with someone selling one used. New???? I dont know, I went with Avids when they made them and now the legends, so all mine were more than that budget I think. The only one I have in that $$$ range is a Compre, just used for jerks, and stuff, really just the red headed step child of my rods no offence .

Potential, yes for sure.

A Revo Toro is a gamble right now. It is such a fad at the moment everyone is pushing them. The Saltist HA in the 20 or 30 is much more well suited to handle an array of musky based tasks.

Hey Man,
I don't know about this Revo toro reel it's more a bass reel I think. I would just
go ahead and buy Penn International 975 or just get one of those new Saltist reels
for this year.

Mn Jackpot, the toro was specifacally designed for big game fishing like muskies but with a low-profile. Abu makes the revo s, sx. stx, and preimer, which are there bass reels.

First off I'm not an Abu fan, but I do own a Toro and so far it's made it through 2 days of abuse. I think it's the real deal and if it lasts the season I'll be replacing more reels with the Toro. As for cowgirls I think it works great and does well with a wide range of baits. I have mine on a 9' Predator, and thats a lot more than your budget but its well worth the cost IMO.

The Abu Revo Toro was designed with larger game fish in mind and is up to the task. Pro staffers have beaten the crap out of the protypes for a while now. It can handle it. However I think most people miss the point when using it for Double number 10 bucktails. You can't just go by the gear ratio of the reel. Line pick up is the main consideration when burning these big bucktails not merely the gearing. There are slower reels that take up alot more line per crank than a high gear ratio reel. When looking for speed in the retrieve you need to look into all aspects of the differing reels for a desired application.

i have been useing my toro for BIG blades and it cranks them in very nice. i have used it ALOT and its been great. time will tell but i think abu got this one right for once. beat the hell out of it, you got a year to try and kill it and if you can send it in to be replaced or fixed. and i love my free pair sunglasses too. if mine holds up till august i will get another.

I assume I am right in getting the 60 model, not the high speed 60HS model for double cowgirls. Maybe I will take a harder look at the Saltist also. What specific model would I want in the Saltist? Do they make a left hand model? Will either do okay in throwing small spring size bucktails also. Or would I be better off fixing my 5602 Abu($30) and putting that on a long lighter rod for small bucks and crankbaits. Thanks for all the replies.

Guest,
I have Abu's that are over 10 years old and still going strong with regular maintenance. I spend about 150 days on the water each year. You might want to login or register and then look at the operator. Nothing lasts long with abuse. Pat

You will NOT be able to throw small baits very well on a Saltist!!! - As long as the Toro 60 is durable (TBD) I have about 50 hrs on this reel - mostly ripping DDD's - and it's held up fine - its the best reel on the market right now if it lasts and I'm starting to think it will - I can throw 1/2 oz baits a mile and it pulls DBL 10's just fine. Smooooth like butttaaa!

Try a okuma 8'6 xxh for $120, the saltist will throw alot baits, I've thrown some grandma's, ss shads, and some smaller double 8's.

Didn't you throw double 10's with a curado too and think that worked just fine?

Everyone's idea of fast is a little bit different...

You can throw anysize bait on the Saltist, its the reeling in that will get things all messed up with no pull to keep the line tight when spooling in, then the next cast WHHHISH Birdie!

** WARNING - Always throw light baits directly into the wind as hard as you can!**

All the baits I said I've thrown are fairly heavy lures, just saying the saltist can be used for more than burning doubles, thats all. I know all of those don't pull as hard as double cowgirl, but alot of guys are using these reels for ripping dawgs, your going to get some loose wraps no matter if the lure weighs a pound. The backlashes that I have on any of my reels is operator error, poor form for me. lol

I have 2 of them and have really put them through the ringers for the last few months. I use the low gear ratio with the power handle for my double 10's and it works awesome. The rod I'm using for this is a 8'6" MH Musky Innovations rod and I'm very impressed with them as well. Very solid construction and light weight. I think you would really like this setup.
