I run two Lowrance X-17Ms on my boat - one on the bow using the universal sonar on my Terrova and one on the console using a transducer mounted on the transom. The weird part is that for some reason there is always about a 3 degree difference in the water temperature between the bow and console units with the bow unit always being warmer. Any idea what would be causing the differential? My initial thoughts were the Terrova is black and is absorbing more heat.

I have a terrova on the front as well - and have the same issue - always 3 degrees diffrence

That's interesting! We'll have to see if more guys with Terrovas notice this. I have a Powerdrive V2, and I run two Lowrance 520s. Both units read the same temperature. I do have different transducers - a skimmer in the rear and the puck style in the front, but both read the same, or very close to the same temp.

Maybe the Terrovas run just a little bit warmer than the V2 does? I would have thought they would use pretty similar motors though.

Does one go deeper than the other? Might that account for it?

That's funny my Terrova is either a little cooler or the same temp. just how you think it would be. If you really want to know which temp gauge is correct you can use a can of ice water and dunk your transducer. It should read 32 degrees, exactly freezing. (Technically it should be distilled water and cubes, but the stuff in your freezer should get you close enough)

Can you calibrate the temp sensor in one of the functions on the depth finder? I don't think it matters what the actual reading is as much as being able to spot a trend where you find some warmer or cooler water.

While the boat is out of the water, turn both on and check..... than use an infered Temp monitor on both and see what is what.

I'd say that the front isn't as deep in the water, thus the warmer temp ?

my Terrova's temp is slightly cooler than the gauge on the back of my boat by about 2 degrees, too.

on a Humminbird unit you can adjust the temperature.

Lambeau,
Maybe the back of your boat will see more action this season, since its Hotter back there!!

I will be on the water tomorrow....I let ya know if I see a diffenrence. I don't think you can change the temp setting on a lowrance but I could be wrong.

I'm pretty sure there is a temperature offset adjustment, at least there is on my LMS-480
