As I repower with a 225 Yamaha Sport, I'm thinking of making the switch to a four blade prop for the water conditions I fish here- chop and waves!

This would be my first four blade. How much rpm and speed do you lose from a three blade? And would I need to go down in pitch (have a 23 now) to get the rpm back?

Good question, I would also like to know the difference between the two.

From what I understand, the four blade provides better stern lift, whole shot, and is more resistant to cavitating in a turn or especially in choppy water, like I fish. But they do slow you down, and you do lose rpm....from what I'm told. Like I say, I've never run one. I'm curious as to how much, and if a pitch change is in order.

All depends on the design of the 4 blade. Extra lift can mean better hull performance. I ran a Revolution 4 on my last rig, and got better top end out of that wheel that a three blade Tempest of the same pitch.

I run a 4 blade Hustler 21 pitch on my Evinrude 225 / 620. I tried a 3 blade when I first got my boat, but my RPM's were too high at low speeds. The cavitation resistance is correct, I think as for the hole shot, it takes a bit longer to get the RPM's up. However, the boat goes on plane quicker so it balances out. Plain and simple, the 4 blade pushes more water, thus better hold, better performance.

i run a 4 blade on my 225 e-tec/ 619. I shoots out of the hole quicker than a 3 blade and it opens up around 58 mph with two people.

O, and i couldn't agree with you more about loving Rangers.

I run a Turbo 2+2 23" on a 225 Opti on a 205 Triton. I'd start out by dropping 1" in pitch and see what happens to your RPM's. I think Rangers are a little heaver than my Triton, and you may need to go to a 21". I get around 5500RPM or so with a 23, which may be a little on the low side, so maybe I should go to a 21" also

Done lots of different props, and the four bladed props give you a better hole shot with a load, with a small decrease in top end speed. They also hold much better on corners and in high waves. I don't think I've had a single cavitation problem since going to the four blade props. In big waves they do a good job.

Thanks Doug. That'd be the main reason for the swap. I fish LSC exclusively, and there's never a day when there's not some chop, all the way up to small craft advisories. It may sound foolish, but I'm not hung up on top speed, as I'm not in a fast boat, and I hardly ever see the top end bouncing off waves here. But hole shot is a big deal as there is alot of stop and go driving, yeilding right of way to the power boats and yachts, and then having to get back up on plane.

I'll probably start with my 23M that I have right now, and see where that puts me. If I make the switch it'd be to one of Yamaha's new High Seas four blades, in21, 22 or 23 depending on what my 23M rpms are.

I have four blade on my 619, it came with our etec and we are planning on getting a 3 blade. 3 blades are sopposed to have more speed

Gotcha on the speed. LSC doesn't allow me to open it up and push my top end too much, which is why I was thinking about a four blade for the rough water. I think I'll spin the three blade the rest of this year, as this repower is tapping me out, but I think I'll try a four blade next spring when the Yamaha High Seas are more available.

I just ran a 4 blade for the first time last week. My E-TEC 200 spun the modified 19 pitch Solas 4 blade at 5750 RPM and 56mph on my Tuffy X-190 with an extremely heavy load, three men - one siting on the live well cover, full live well, a boatload of walleye tackle, and full cooler. I ran a similarly modified 21 pitch Laser II 3 blade the first day and had the same RPMs and about 3 mph faster but it struggled mightily to get out of the hole, and was a pain in the butt to keep on plane at slower speeds in the rougher water. The 4 blade was a much better hole shot prop and was easier to keep the boat under control in the waves. I could use a little more venting on the 4 blade prop to let the RPMs climb faster but otherwise it works slick! I'll still use the 3 blade occasionally for light musky fishing loads but the 4 blade will be the prop of choice when there are 3 on board and in big water.
