| I put a brand new 70#-24V-Maxxum on my 1760, and it either has a problem or I do. I had it wired by a professional, so I thought everything was trouble-free. First one of the prongs on the plug started to melt causing that electrical fire stink. I shut it down immediately and put on a new plug and coated the prongs with a light coat of dielectric ignition gel. No more smell or melting, but today I was out fishing in a 10-15 mph wind, and I had to run it on 100% all day. Though I only fished about 3 hours, by the end of the trip I could not make any headway into a 15 mph wind. I expected lots more from this motor.
I checked the wiring, and there is a black wire connected to one battery (both brand new) and the red wire has a blue stripe on it. On the second battery there is a red wire and a black wire with a blue stripe. Is this correct, or should the striped wires go to the same battery. There is no cross-over wire, and I was told that there is no need for one.
Somebody help me give this thing a kick in the butt so I can get the 70#'s of thrust that I'm supposed to be getting.
Any help is appreciated. I hate being ticked off at a new boat because it doesn't meet my expectations, or should I sell it and get a stronger one? I was told that 70# was more than enough.

Location: Eagle River, WI | For a 24v system you should have a red and a black going to the trolling motor. the red being positive and the black being negative. Then there should be a "jumper" wire going from the negative one one battery to the positive on the other battery.
I think that your trolling motor is wired for 12v right now and that's why you melted the plug and you don't have any power.
1/2 the voltage = 2x the amperage

This is a Marinco system, and NO jumper is needed. You are crosswired, my friend.
Black wire battery one neg, red wire battery one pos, the front battery in the trays.
Black with blue stripe neg, battery two, red with blue stripe pos battery two.
Plug should be wired with pos in 24 lead, neg in that hole.
Done.
No saying it should be any other way, this is dead on.
I was on the phone calling in the live leaderboard when you called, just finished the reports for the day.
You will then have full power, and it'll be more than enough for that rig.

| Thanks Steve. I'll switch those red wires around tomorrow.
I knew that should have been more than enough power for that rig. Also knew that there was something wrong someplace.
Thanks my friend.

| a couple things to make sure to check as you do this:
1) the Marinco plug has 3 wire holes: 1 for neg, 1 for 12v, and 1 for 24v. as Steve said, use 24v (red) and Neg (black).
2) make sure that the wire connections in the plug are tightly screwed down onto the leads. if they aren't tightly in place you'll overheat the 24v jumper inside the plug - that's likely what caused the melting on your first plug.
the Marinco jumper plug really simplifies trolling motor and battery installation. having the system pre-rigged in the Tuffy for 12v, 24v, or 36v means all you have to do is connect your batteries and go. great stuff.
