I am looking at getting some trolling rods. I intend to use them for trolling with boards and flat lines. I'll be trolling a pretty general variety of baits.

The Shimano TDRs looked pretty good. Would the 8 ft heavy probably be the best bet?

Thanks!

I troll 8' to 9' medium heavy with both boards and flat lines with no issues.

I think it depends on what you're running. I run the 8' mediums (I think) for my board rods, and 9' mediums for my inside rods and they pull those just fine. Depth Raiders and 10" jakes are about as big as I run on them, but I've had no issues. I use them as my board rods on Lake Michigan as well as my pump handle rods and they work fantastic for that application too.

I'm sure the heavies would work too though. You'll probably get more backbone out of them than the mediums have.
