When can I start using my cowgirl again, is it still to early in the year? Or can I start catching some fish now? What do the water temps have to get up too?
I am talking the southern WI lakes. Anyone know?

I quadruple the belief that Cowgirls are a full season bait! I usually don't follow the old rule of going small in the spring! A lot of the time I go bigger!

Are you always burning it in as fast as possible during daylight hours troughout the season or do you ever slow-roll it?

Jarid, I definetly change up the speeds according to the time of year and the weather. In the spring time (water temps 52-60) I try to keep it a little slow but not deep. I will reel in slow with my rod tip high, giving it a couple of pulls to get it closer to the surface.
But during the dog days of summer (HOT) I will burn it right under the surface!
As it gets more and more into the fall on cold fronts I will go pretty slow and if I'm in deep water, than I'll keep it deep.
Hope that helps, it works for me!

Fish in southern WI don't eat cowgirls :)

One of my buddies catches fish with cowgirls on oakcauchee all the time. Fish on Pewaukee dont really hit cowgirls, i have better luck on dc8's and 9's.

I want one!

Are they hard work to use?

Is there a particular colour that stands out as a great catcher?

Cheers Rob.

Rob T, they are hard to use only if you don't have the right equipment. If you want it to be easy too use, I would go with a 5.1 or 5.2 gear ratio reel and add a power handle. Use a long rod, 8' is fine.
With color, the best thing too do is try them all out on your lakes you are fishing and see what color they like in that specific lake. Just remember, in low light (overcast) contrast colors real stand out.

Jake, it's easy to see Team Rhino was being sarcastic. Take it lightly! We often joke and say Cowgirls are too big for Wisconsin fish, they only work in Minnesota. Sad thing is there is many northern WI guides who actually think this way and do not use them. Works for me!

I remeber, I was fishing on a NW WI lake a couple seasons ago, when i passes another boat going the opposite direction - The fella in the bow shouted at me while I was tossing my Chart DCG "Hey Minnesota, what the hell ya gonna catch with that thing?" I just smiled and nodded, and two casts later nabbed a nice 47 incher right where they came from. At the access, they asked "how big that fish was?", and stated that "they had been in that corner working for like an hour and didn't have a follow."
Being the nice Minnesotan I am, I gave them the bait. Loaded up and headed back to the land of 10,000 lakes!

Haha thats great. I often get the same stupid remarks from bass guys/house owners here in Michigan that don't know anything about muskies. They soon get informed when I pull a 45" from the weeds in front of their dock.

Think I will have to find an alternative as the Musky Online postage to the UK is $25 , shock horror!

The two guys I saw this past weekend (MN walleye/pike opener) thought it was early enough to use a DCG.

Muskie season opens June 6. I asked if they'd caught any muskies, and they replied, with smiles on their faces, "Muskies? We're not fishing for muskies. We're fishing for northerns and bass. Muskie season isn't open yet." Neither is bass season, which I pointed out.

That’s risky business this time of year where the Musky season is still closed, as the DNR makes the final call as to whether they believe you are "targeting Muskies” out of season, and it could lead to a hefty fine.

That's crap! I hope you called the DNR - I went out for pike on opener - Using spinning rods, 20# braid and the new Clackin' Raps. It was fun for the hour I did it!

First Class mail can be sent for considerably cheaper. But if you want any type of tracking or delivery confirmation, $26.50 is actually the cheapest rate for shipping to the UK. Then you're looking at an additional $3 for every additional pound to your package. The postal service has really jacked prices for international shipping in the last few years.

Don't have a lot of experience with them, but would think that the cowgirls are good year round. Just make sure they consent first.
