Location: Indiana | I'm picking up my new boat on Friday and I went with the HDS-7 Base map units. I see they have an update on Lowrance's website 3/09. But after watching the video posted from one of the shows about the units not reading the navioincs chips until 4/13/09 has me worried it won't work. Is the update ready and where can I find it to make sure everything works this weekend. |

The only problem I know of is the Lowrance update that is still unavailable. Right now, the Navionics chips are not supported by the HDS units but will be soon.
I've heard a lot of good from the few guys that have them and have said they are just unbelievable. So far so good, other than the update issue.
I talked with a buddy who is a Lowrance Technician this afternoon and he said the Navionics update in which the HDS units will be able to support those chips will be released May 15. Navionics has a small glitch in the Turboview and they felt it was important to have it perfect before releasing. The folks at Lowrance have seen it on the computer and it works in the units, but it's not perfect from what he said after talking with the Navionics folks. |

| I had 2 HD units in my shopping cart at Cabellas a couple weeks ago and was on my way to the cashier. Then I happened to run into a Lowrance Rep who was working at the electronics booth. According to the Lowrance Rep all units that will be sold this summer are already produced. They will all require an update that will need to be down loaded from the Lowrance site. I went through that process last year with horrible results. I want to upgrade my X27 and Lms520 but I will not buy another unit that does not have all the bugs out of its system. It is too much money to spend on a product that needs to be fixed before you can use it. Just my thoughts.

Location: Indiana | The sonar portion of the units work great great detail, nice bright screen. Not being able to read the chips sucks though. I have the insight maps loaded on but Webster is not on the list but a small lake outside of Muncie (Muncie Res.) is. Doesn't make any since to me. I didn't have any problems with the GPS losing signal even with them flush mounted on the dash with the full windshield. |

Location: Stevens Point, WI | For those of you that have bought the new Lowrance HDS units, in order for them to read the Navionics chips, you must do this update that will allow the unit to read the chip.
Lowrance has a warning when updating:
Warning:
This update is 310MB, and can take a very long time to download on some internet connections. For example, estimated download time for dialup 56K modems is 12-14 hours, some DSL and cable internet is 30 minutes to 1 hour, and high-speed cable internet is 4-5 minutes.
If you have a slower connection, a slightly smaller 190MB version is available. This version will work for Lake Insight, Nautic Insight, Insight USA or Enhanced Background versions sold in the United States and Canada. It does include the Navionics® background chart necessary to run Navionics® cards but does not include Navionics® Platinum+ demonstration charts.
If you experience problems with the online installer, please first try to download the stand-alone installer for your operating system listed just below the online installer. If you continue to have issues downloading the update installer, please select the next solution based on your location:

Location: Wisconsin | Newest update is out for the HDS units...
Software Update Notification (June 5, 2009): Following the release of HDS Update 2.0.30.50 on May 15, 2009, field reports indicated a concern with HDS units not reading select U.S. lake maps on a limited number of Navionics charts. Specifically, the problem is known to affect portions of lake maps on Navionics HotMaps Premium North and HotMaps Premium East 2009 charts.
Now available for download, this more recent HDS software release -- 2.1.30.58 -- corrects the limited number of concerns previously experienced with 2.0.30.50 (as noted above). In addition, this latest HDS software update will also dramatically increase the speed of loading times for all Lowrance cartography.
While software update 2.1.30.58 primarily addresses mapping functionality on HDS models, we still recommend that HDS-5x sonar-only users download this latest software release to ensure compatibility with other HDS models that may exist on a boat’s network.
Lowrance and Navionics sincerely appreciate our customers’ patience and consideration, as this recent software update was being developed.
