I'm having alot of trouble with backlashes on my non-levelwind Saltist Reel! Its spooled with 80# Cortland line! Any tips would be great. This is becoming a real pain in the Butt!

i am thinking about buying an Avet non-levelwind reel. Is there any special way or trick to spooling it with line? I have never owned a non levelwind reel.

tmusky, I'm pretty sure thats not the problem! I'm going to try a different type of line. maybe that will help!

I have the shimano torium which does not have a level wind. It will backlash if I hold the rod angled while reeling in a lure because the line will pull towards that pressured side. If I reel in with my rod tip straight up or down pointing at the lure I have no problems. But the minute I stop paying attention and turn to the side a little bit I backlash the next cast.

As for spooling use your fingers like a levelwind going back and forth, only fill spool about 3/4 full and you should have no problems.

When you are spooling it, make sure your first several passes are across the entire spool. Then start stacking the sides more like a "V". Light in the center. Your last 100-125 feet, spool across the whole spool again. The "V" will help your line stack in a better manner. Also, use line with a heavier diameter, and holds it's cylindrical shape better. Tuf-line plus 80-100# is awesome non level wind line. They are designed originally for mono based applications so line diameter is a huge thing.
Also, I'm not sure what lures you are using, but to run properly the bait should have quite a bit of tension on the retrieve, that why it is a perfect reel for straight cranking big blades. I'm guessing the reason you are backlashing is because of a lack of tension that is not packing the line on properly during your retrieve.

24/7 figured that wasn't your problem either but just offering a suggestion. i had that problem by trying to get as much line on the spool as possible, but had about 10 yards too much.

I never use my spool break on my levelwind reels but found it a little more important on my Saltist. I think line makes a differance as well. As stated above, use a thicker line. I switched from Power Pro to 80# Invisibraid and that seem to help a lot. Also, as stated hard pulling lures do better.

Filling the spool full can give you trouble as well. When I got my nonlevelwind everyone said leave some spool open, like an 1/8 of an inch or so.

Thanks for all the input! I'll try to sort it all out now and get it squared away!

I have the 40 w/levelwind - even with the level wind there are definately better reels out there to try to throw baits accurately, especially into the wind, the spool break is hard to "fine tune" I find myself messing with it more than any other reel I have owned. I feel the Saltist is a one trick pony - but then again that all I bought it for - It definately takes the work out of big blades

Aren't all Avet's lever drag? If so I don't think you'll like them. You have to reset the lever to the right setting after each cast. I think that would be a pain.

I'm trying an Avet I bought this year when season opens. I set the drag dial so when you flip the lever up to reel it stops right before the point of full engage. Set your drag tension where you want it right at that point. I've been practicing with it in the back yard and i think it's going to be fairly easy to use. Quick flip down to cast, quick flip up to retrieve. Just takes a little to get use to. I'm liking not having a levelwind on the cast. More distance with no levelwind to get in the way.

Jim, I wasn't aware that there was a separate control to set the drag relative to the lever position. Sounds like that should work just fine then. So you're saying you push the lever pretty much all the way forward, and then adjust the drag to where you want it, and you can return the lever to that position after each cast pretty easily, right?

There is a dial on the side where normaly your star drag is. That dials similar to a star drag. turn it like a star drag to tighten the drag. The lever drag has a freespool position all the way down, Full engage all the way up. It kind of clicks into both these positions and the middle area it glides back and forth smoothly about an inch or so back and forth. I set mine just before it clicks into full engege for retrieving. When you flip it up real quick when your fishing it hits the notch before full engage. You can just flip it up to that position really easy for quick retrieve.
That probably didn't make any sense but you'll just have to hold one. They do have unbelievable freespool. They feel smooth and bulletproof.
