I put mono backing on all my reels this year, I just went and bought a 600 yd spool of 20lb mono. I probably put about 50 yds maximum on each reel.

30 Lb, mono just because that's what I had. 20 would probably work, too. I probably fill the spool maybe 1/3 of the way

I use the smallest stuff i have, even if it's 4lb. The smaller the line the harder it packs. If I get down to the backing, my partner gets a pounding for not getting on the trolling motor.

I use 12lb on 80lb Cortland masterbraid, isnt best to match the diameter of the braid with mono?

I put whatever old mono I have on hand that I want to get rid of. Typically in the 10-14lb range.

This is always under debate, I used mono this year that was 20# and my suffix 80# had 20# diameter.

The matching of backing diameter to line diameter is an old fly fishing rule. Probably for blood knots and when chances are both lines would be in use on a cast or a fight. As long as you can put a good knot to it I don't think it's that huge of a deal. Just make sure your braid to backing ratio is a maximum of 75/25. That way you'll never have to worry getting down to the mono ever.

Anything past about 100 feet of my muskie lines never sees the light of day. I normally get 2 reels out of a spool of braid, bulk out the arbor with whatever junk mono is handy. We rarely (if ever) troll with leads longer than about seventy feet, maybe a long bomb cast will drain close to one hundred. A 150 yd spool will do two reels for me, most of what I put on never even exits the levelwind. Pack it high and deep if you're after chinnoks though!! I reverse a lot of braid too. Never had my line break, some muskie combos have line on them thats been there a couple seasons. Just what works for me, I know guys who load on a fresh couple hundred yards a couple times a season.

That's me! I respool or reverse my lines twice a season, and strip my reels every spring.

Where are they putting the barrel swivel? I would assume they are talking about using that for line to leader, I couldn't imagine anyone dumb enough to put a barrell swivel on there reel with line on top of it, not to mention I dont know if they make barrel swivels small enough to fit through the line guide on the reel.

That's goofy - The last thing I would want in my spool, is a swivel, even if it is tiny - Sounds like someone doesn't know how to tie their knots

thats what i was thinking to it must be line to the leader. ive seen pretty small swivels but wouldnt want one going through my guides. They said that the were useing it from the backing to the braid.

just use a uni to uni, about 3 turns should be good enough. and make sure it lines up in the middle of the spool when spooling up or it will spool unevenly

75/25 huh? I was thinking about 100 yards of braid and fill the rest. How do you guys know how much is actually on there? Are you going it directly off the spool, or pulling if off what you want on and then get it on the reel?I have three reels I was going to do with 1 300yrd pack of Cortland. And 1 300 yrds of Mono. This should all even out correctly right?

I use the same mono backing on my reels for years and years. Do it accurately once and you should never have to deal with it again IMO. The strength of mono or the knot you tie shouldn't matter as you should never get to your mono backing while fishing - EVER.
Step by step here is how I usually do it. New reel on a rod, put a cheap linecounter on the rod and reel on 100 yards of new braid. Then tie mono backing line to it and reel onto the reel until it is as full as you want. Then rip all of the line off or rel it onto a spare reel - could be onto a spinning reel just laying around. When I reel off all of the mono I cut the tie, then I pull off the braid and pile it nicely on the floor. Once the reel is empty - I reel on the mono from the other reel, then tie the braid back to the mono and reel it all on. Then the first time I hit the water with new line on a reel I let out about half of my line with a jake or something similair and then reel it all back in under tension to get it packed on nice and tight before I start casting.
I know this is takes a little longer to do but it works out perfect and when I replace the braid on my reel I always put back on 100 yards plus or minus a few yards because that is all there is room for on my reel when I have the right amount of backing. I use 2 lb. mono for my backing because that is what I have laying around. As long as you have some mono for backing you will be ok - it doesn't matter what diameter IMO.

I did 50/50 with my Saltist 40 and still put over 200 yards of Stealth 80LB - that reel is a monster, but man can it make a bucktail move
