Location: Medford, WI | Jon, that's an awesome setup for being somewhat new. I've been into this for 3 years now and only have:
8" XH Shimano Compre / Calcutta 400B - Pounders, 2x10's, suicks, topwater, etc.
6'9 St. Croix Premier / Millionaire - Jerkbaits and jackpots
7' Old Fenwick / Guide Series 66 - Basically a sucker set up
That's about it right now...quite a few more reels that go on some old rods once in a while for sucker rods. I also have a rand new 8'6" XH Tica Musky Rod that I'm looking to sell if you want to match it up with your Tekota Jon!
I definitely agree about being jealous of Jerry...someday...right now, college doesn't allow me to spend as much as I want.

My buddy saw this thread and thought I should show you what you have in store - The Rod holders on the ceiling were my wife's Idea, She had a great idea for reel storage as well... Location: Eagle River, WI | I have a collection that is about 1/4 of what Jerry's is, in the basement. My wife counted the baits that are just hanging and not getting used the other day. She asked me why I needed 178 musky baits that I didn't even use. I asked her why she needed 37 pairs of black shoes that she doesn't even wear. She turned and went upstairs. I slept on the couch last night.
Anyways, back to the original post:
8'6" Legend Tournament BigDawg / Abu Garcia Revo Toro 60
8' Musky Innovations Magnum Bulldawg / St. Croix AC 300
8' St. Croix Premier MHF / St. Croix AC 300
7'2" St. Croix Premier MHF / Abu Garcia 5600 C4
The last rod is almost exclusively a gliderbait rod. I like to work gliders with a downward pull and I've found that this length with a high speed (6.3:1) reel works the best for me. |

Seems more and more, the Okumas take the bulk of the abuse, except for jerkbaits, where the Lami get's the nod. The Weagle Rod is just that, pretty much always has a weagle on it.

Location: Oswego, IL | Jerry, once again good stuff! Welldriller- TV, Lures, deer, is that also a sleeping bag out there now?lol! thats for sure what i will need if I decorated the garage like that. So funny, and totally right about comparing a womens addition to ours, RIGHT ON! I will tuse that next time, but make sure I have a helmet on before anything comes out of my mouth! I think the craziest thing is how much $$ I have spent and I still feel like I dont have much at all. As far as lures, I have 1 big Lakewood with all brand new lures, and four smaller boxes, thats it, maybe a total of 75 lures, but s$$t at $20+ a pop adds up quick. I make sure I had the right catch and release stuff before I started spending too much money on lures. Crazy expensive hobby, next year I will have a new boat, so I guess once thats in the garage it will hide everything else I buy.

1 - Okuma 8'6" XH/Okuma Indurion: Big Rubber, double 10's, all purpose
1 - 8'6" Hamer Rod/Okuma Red Isis: Big Rubber, double 10's,...also seems fairly all purpose
1 - 8' Gander MH Tournament Extreme/Okuma Induron: Topwater, jerkbaits, regular bucktails
Being built:
1 - 8'6" H St. Croix Premier being built by Pro Edge. Will be paired with an Okuma Induron. Sounds like a good rod for double 10's, probably a good all around rod.
On their way to my door:
1 - 8' H Shimano TDR/have a 20 series Okuma Magda for it: Trolling
1 - 7'6" H Bass Pro Catt Maxx rod/have a Gander Linecounter for this one: Trolling and sucker aplications
1 - 7'6" H Bass Pro Power Plus rod/ reel?: HOPEFULLY a trolling and sucker rod, but I have no idea if the rod will fit the applications or not. For only $25, it would be nice if it does.

| not to get off topic, how does the thorne brothers predator H compare to the sling blade. how does the predator XH compare to big dawg? |
|

Location: Pelican Rapids, MN | They are all built with SCVI graphite mesh, but the Predator's solid 9' blank makes it a bit more parabolic than the Sling and the Dawg. It seems the power rating would go as such -
4. Big Dawg
3. Predator XH
2. Slingblade
1. Predator H
I have all of these rods, and I call the Predators, the in-betweeners. |

| so the the best rod for twitching 10"cranks would be the XHpredator or the slingblade |

| how will the xh predator handle 10" cranks and mag dawgs. does it have a slightly stiffer tip than the slingblade? |

7' heavy bass pro rod with pflueger president for light lures.
Not bad for a rookie IMO. LOL

Location: Eagle River, WI | Easy gunpowder. Jerry was just making an observation. He wasn't taking a shot at your gear. I wish I had all that stuff, I'm always scrambling to put rods and reels together when I am taking people that are new to the sport out. If I had an arsenal like yours I don't think I would have a problem putting something together for them. |

Are the predator rods also built with ART and IPC technology like the LT series? Thanks. |

Location: Pelican Rapids, MN | I used to use the Compre's until I started snapping them left and right - and they hassled me about replacing them so many times. St. Croix's are so much better in quality and service. Not to mentioned made in the USA.
If you really want me to change your jealousy to pure insanity, I can list my entire musky battery for you? I just did an inventory for my accountant. |

Location: Pelican Rapids, MN | This rod battery has been accumulated over a decade - All my older rods have either been sold or broken. I have a starting 6, then some rods get subbed in depending on the pattern. Plus, several of these I use as client and travel rods. It's a pain trying to fly with a rod over 8'. I do sell some every once and a while when some new stuff comes out - But since joining the St.Croix prostaff, I have only sold my non-St. Croix and some custom stuff. I have sold and replaced about 10 rods this year alone. |

| Jsondag---wow quite impressive. Nice tackle. All from prostaff job? I think I'd like to get into that---what are these companys looking for? Qualifications? Experiance? Education ? I've been chasing muskys for 8 seasons now and been pretty successful 50 is my best. I've won 2 walleye tourneys so I have the fishing experiance...it looks like a good deal and all especially the tackle. I could change jobs and fish full time.

Location: Pelican Rapids, MN | Not trying to be a jerk, but Prostaff deals aren't just for people who know how to fish and want a deal on gear. Anyone can catch a fish. It is more about being a positive image (as a guide or tourney pro) for the company you are representing - I think one of the thing's that I bring to the table besides being gregarious is the fact that I have a pretty extensive fishing history (pleasure, professional and tourney) - From ponds to great lakes to oceans - I've tried and accomplished quite a bit. From Blue gills to billfish, with musky being my favorite. It hasn't been cheap and stuff isn't free.
As for the "Trust Baby" reply - Don't ask a question that could be construed as demeaning if you are too cowardly to post your real name.
This will be my last reply to a post / question by a "Guest".

| Jsondag---no no you didn't sound like a jerk. I was interested in the aspects of prostaff. Thanks for the reply. I was wondering since musky are so seasonal, do travel to the warmer climates and guide offshore...like is it part of I prostaff gig? |

Location: Pelican Rapids, MN | I still do a lot of offshore fishing - however, the last few years, it has been minimal due to expos / seminars and whatnot. I hope to put more days on the ocean in the future. Going to Fla. Saturday - Hope I have time to get out! |

| jerry: you go through alot of equipment-- so you need alot I guess. Do you use the same lineup when you pursue billfish? Getting your clients in 5 to1 or 10 to1 situation must be a trip, 400lb swordfish on a musky rod...for me thats just a sweet dream. I know the reels don't have the line capacity so you back the fish down, right? The saltwater must take the real toll on the equipment , so you got to be ready when the season opens |

Location: Pelican Rapids, MN | I haven't really busted out much Musky gear offshore - I have caught Bonito on casted Fuzzy Duzzit's though - and had a cuda eat and break a really old topwater. As for rods, for marlin we have always used conventional saltwater gear from
20-130# stand-up and sit down set-ups. For sailfish though we use XH spinning rods and 12# mono. All my saltwater buddies bust my chops hard because of the heavy duty gear we use - And of course the reply is, it's not the weight of the fish that determines the combo, it's the weight of the lure... As for landing big billfish, it's all about stamina and a good captain. The handling of the boat is all that really matters - a lot of times the angler is just winding line while the capt. backs down and fights the fish with the boat. And for the saltwater deterioration part - a lot of freshwater gear wouldn't last a week out on an offshore boat - just the moisture in the air will eat away at it. |

Location: Pelican Rapids, MN | No, actually, depending on my clients gear, I encourage them to use my stuff. Of course, I have rods and reels that are primarily for client use. I would never charge extra for the use of my gear - Even when they backlash four times and snap off four new dawgs... |

Location: Pelican Rapids, MN | This is actually my 5th full season of guiding professionally. In '00 - '03 I would just take out people here and there, no advertising. Just word of mouth. Back then, I hadn't really built up enough confidence to guide the way I wanted to. Plus, I was still spending months at a time on offshore boats in Florida, Mexico, and the Bahamas. After permanently moving to MN and a few 100+ fish seasons I felt ready, and in '04, I made my first brochure and advertised locally. Because I am a "Local Guide" and not a traveller... And not on Mille Lacs , I didn't receive the recognition of some of the other guides out there. I didn't have a website (which is in the works) and I don't have a bait company (not in the works) - So I flew under the radar for a long time. Then a few published photos / articles - The exposure of EA and the Big blades Mayhem DVD and all the sudden my blip on the radar showed up. It has been a blast ever since. The last 5 years have yielded little in $ and a lot of bumps, but heavy in great fishing, great clients, great friends, and a reputation as Knee-a put it, " a good fisherman", that I hope will always be there.
I did however just come up with the name "HEADSHAKER" last year! |

| Ahhhh....jsondag, a marina rat. Those were the days, uh ? I spent 3 years at Honokohau and 2 black marlin seasons in Cairns before moving "up the latter". You know i.e., choppin' bait for chum, chasing for 80kgs of ice, kissing the Cobbers arse and basicly the captains butt boy. Alot of fisherman who haven"t gone offshore don't understand 30 stiches from a 'hoo, being tail whipped by a mahi or a billfish taking a 1/4 inch of flesh off the forearm (never been stuck though, you?) How about a Cobber fighting a grander for 9 hours and you run out of drinking water! Licking the blood of a fresh caught skipjack sure is refreshing, you know. Those experiances are priceless. I think the musky guys are special, there's many of these guides (who are good) haven't ventured far from the lake. The clients want more. Not just some local guy or a rich guy with a nice boat. Clients want to hear the stories. js, tell your story they will come, your book will be filled. |

Location: Pelican Rapids, MN | Yeah, I have a motto... It is kind of self-absorbed sounding but it is a valid point - "CAN YOUR GUIDE FISH?" There are so many guides for so many singular species. Because of their focus on one fish, they aren't fisherman in the definition created by guys like Hemningway, Grey, and even Goudy. I love muskies, they are my passion, but I have had 30+ years of experience of chasing fish in both fresh and salt. I have seen a lot and have stories of life, love, death, and glory on the water. It has been a hell of a ride - Hope it continues forever.
Those days will always be burned into my soul - I have an opportunity to go out on the GBR for 2 weeks in August. I'd rather go in September but hey.... Can't go anyway though! And yes, I have been stuck - right in the chest by a pacific sail off Acapulco. The bill went in about an inch, right above my nipple - It was a short fight, the fish was losing it's color, and I leaned over the side after I had wired it. I grabbed it by the bill, and the C&H Alien was lodged in the base of it. I pulled it back to get at the hook, and.... I don't know if I hit a nerve or what, but that fish powered up and lunged. Stuck me right in the chest. It was about a 130-140 class sail. So it had some power.
Every fisherman alive should see heaven on earth - This is what heaven looks like-
