Location: Stevens Point, WI | Before i take the thing in i figured i'd try here and see if you guys know what the deal is with my motor, this one has me stumped. Friday it started knocking really loudly when in forward gear. We made it back to the launch and i hooked it up to the muffs and ran it. It stopped knocking shortly therafter and it stopped engaging when in forward throttle. Reverse works, though it doesn't seem to be engaging all the way in reverse either. Compression test is good, everything else checks out fine- is there some pin or clip that is busted? This one is beyond me, thanks guys! | |

There should be a way to adjust the shift linkage on the starboard side of the motor that might help. I'm guessing on the back side of the shift handle, there will be a screw that can be loosened and it will allow you to adjust the shifting. If that screw has come loose and the linkage moved, that would explain the potential clunking.
Worst thing I can think of is you may have some stripped gears in the lower unit...That you can check as well. If the motor is a pin-drive (non through hub exhaust) you can remove the prop and actually remove the lower part of the housing. There is probably a gasket that could get replaced as well, so if everything checks out down there, you've just done a good worthwhile inspection of the lower unit, and have a newly sealed lower unit.
My gut says linkage...I'd start there...

| I had an evinrude that did that to me also, it turned out to be a bad shear pin of all things. Hope you find it. | |

Location: Elk River, Minnesota | If the linkage is not set properly, it will not engage the shift rod enough to make forward work, but enough to get reverse to work. What you may find helpful is along the side of the mid section, there should be a little rectangle with 2 screws holding it in place. That will come off and just behind it will be the shift rod that goes to the lower unit.
To adjust, loosen the screw on the back side of the shift lever. go to the opening of the mid section and move the linkage down(I believe...I'll check when I get home). Then, move the shift lever back so it clicks into position. Retighten set screw on the back of the lever. Then try moving it forward. If it moves and locks into place, it should be o.k...might have to fuss with it a tad... If anything, mark the rod before you do anything so if you need to get it back to where it was, you can.
Am I correct in assuming this is a pin-drive motor?
