Subject: aluminum v-hull boat questions

hey guys, im thinking about buying a 14ft aluminum v-hull boat. the classic with the three bench seats. i have a couple questions about them though. how stable are they? i dont want the boat to tip over when i reach over the side to grab a musky out of the net or grab a bass. if i did get one of them, i would want to put a trolling motor on the front and i was looking at the motor guide bulldog trolling motor and was wondering if the 30" shaft would be enough or if there are other ways to mount a bow mount without having much to mount it to. all the ones i've seen there hasnt been much to mount it to in the front. and i dont fish on really big lakes so the biggest waves ive seen are like 1- 1.5 footers, and thats in a big wind in the middle of the lake. also, how fast could i go in one with like a 10-15hp motor? would it be stable enough to build a casting deck on top of the front bow seats? or would that put too much weight too high up?how much of a draft do most of these kind of boats have? sorry for such a long post. any answers to these question would help. thanks!!

Hiya,

If you are looking to put a bowmount on, it isnt too bad to do: all you would need is the following...
A piece of 3/4" marine grade plywood
A couple of pieces of angle aluminum
Stainless bolts and locknuts
Carpet if you choose

As for a front deck, you can do it and it will work ok...I did this on a 14 foot alumacraft. Made a frame out of 2 x 2 which also included a platform underneath for the battery which helps stability.

I made mine so they could come out for cleaning and storage. Worked really well for the smaller lakes.

shouldn't be too tipsy, and I don't think a single person could tip a boat like that over.

A 15hp motor will do well on it too. Probably see right around 20 or so for speed...

I will be home on Sunday and I will take pics of my setup. I have a transom mount TM on the front of the boat. If you pull the control head apart, you can turn it 180 degrees so that the control faces you when the motor is in forward. If you are unclear about what I am talking about, the twist control for speed and the prop are on the same side as the shaft.
