My stomach turns, I was there last year. Fortunately I had my knipex right next to me, the bad thing is that my boatpartner didnt believe me when I said I had a hook in the finger, so he reacted slow. And the needle in my knuckle at the ER was 100x worse than the hook and fish in my middlefinger.

thats why you DO NOT grab the bait with your hand. something like that can have a lasting effect if it causes permerment damage. it only takes once and you my never be able to fish again. thats a risk i will not take. atleast you got a good laugh after that, and a lesson learned the hard way. maybe so bogo grips might help.

Had a similar incident only with a northern. I didn't grab the lure, i just went to hand land the fish behind the gills. It decided to shake and swing the front treble hooks through my thumb in one side and out the other. Luckily bolt cutters and a pair of pliers and the help of my buddy and out the hook came. I'll never hand land a fish without a glove ever again.....

I think "dumb idea" came to my head before ouch did... Although, I think he was trying to grab the fish with a Boga thing and not actually grabbing the bait. I think the fish just shook at the wrong time and his hand and the bait ended up at the same place at the same time.
Ouch definately came to my head after watching the fish thrash a few times with the hook in his hand!

Did the same thing on a 24-26" northern on the Big "V" last year . Went to grab it behind the gills and it throw the hook right in my thumb. Not fun having a fish jerking around with a hook thru your flesh and the other in the fish. Glad it wasn't a big fish, I'd probably had wet my pants.

Jeremy (RUMBLEFISH) hooked himself to a 40 incher one day on Shabbona. 5 OT right through all the veins and tendons on the underside of his wrist. No knipex anywhere. Broke my cheap bolt cutters trying to cut the hook. Had to take him to the ER. Funny thing was the doc had the maintenance guy bring up the 18 inch industrial size bolt cutters!!!! Needless to say, I bought both of us a pair of Knipex the very next day!!!!!!

After watching the video of the bass angler with no legs and missing an arm I was in awe. We should all take a minute and thank our maker for our good fortunes. There is always someone that has it worse then we do on our worse day.

A tough, brave guy. But it is foolish to go after muskie or even big pike without gloves and an adequate net. Bad results for fish and for angler.

Thats why you wear a glove!!!!!!!!!!! After a scare last year where tendons almost got cut in my hand, I went and bought a glove. It could have been worse, good thing the fish was a smaller fish vs a pig.

Will a glove really prevent a hook from penetrating into your hand? I don't use a glove, but after watching that, I might invest in one.
Not all gloves are created equal when it comes to hooks, I had a Lindner glove last year and that thing was like wearing a bulletproof vest on my hand.

Happened to me last year. That is why you have your cutters and all release tools out before attempting to unhook. I had the hook cut within seconds if it going in my hand. Luckily it hit a meaty portion of my hand so the pain was minimal. The bigger pain was knowing the fish were turning on and I had to head to the ER.

I admit it I'm a girlie man when it comes to things like this, I would have passed out and my buddies would have had to cut the hooks, at least I would have been unconsious for the thrashing from the fish and the hook removal
Now if it happened to one of my buddies first in line would be to get him free of the fish, Get the hooks out, Get him to a doctor, Get Beer and laugh at him for the rest of his life
