I live on the east side of Lake Winnebago (WI) and I'm wondering what would be some close bodies of water that I could go chase Muskies on on May 2. I'm pretty new to the sport. Any suggestions would be awesome.

Well, I'd spend some time on Winnebago... There was an informative article several months ago in MH written specifically about musky in Winnie. Apparently there's some tankers in there.

Well the Winnebago System doesn't open for muskies until May 23rd so you'll have to go elsewhere.

Closest lakes that would be open would be in Sheboygan Co.

It does actually open on the 2nd of May.
It is written wrong in the regs. We just talke about this at our Muskie Club meeting and our club is having a outing on the Winnebago chain on the 2nd

Random or Elkhart would be a place to start.

If you are looking for something that is a whole lot of fun for a good cause, and at a bonifide "musky factory," consider heading just a tad farther South for the Pewaukee Lake Musky Classic on May 9th. It's a major fundraiser for the Milwaukee Chapter of MI and a trophy only contest for those who are not fans of money tournaments. It always starts with early morning coffee and dounuts, a free hat, and a totally nice banquet afterwards where almost everybody wins some kind of a decent door prize. It's also sort of "laid-back" where a lot of guys stop several times during the day at one of the watering holes on the lake for a bite or a cold one. Hope to see you there on the water. Marty Forman

Hey motoyama, I've heard of some pretty big ski's in Winnebago. I had a guy tell me he saw a big one during sturgeon fishing near Stockbridge. I don't know where one would start but it would be worth a try. I'm from Brothertown so we are not far apart. Ken

Please don't go to little green I'm probably going there. I'm on the west side of winnebago and I fish the fox all the time for smallmouth. My buddy lost a small 30in tiger last week while we were fishing for smallies. During the summer I see alot of people trolling little lake for muskies between the trestle trail and the highway. You could always try out there.

Little Lake is in the northern zone.

bridgeman - The regulations are correct. The 2009 WI DNR regulations state SPECIFICALLY in the Lake Winnebago Regulations section that Lake Poygan, Winneconnie, Big Lake Butte Des Mortes, Lake Winnebago and all their tributaries etc... Motor Trolling is permitted. The open season on muskellunge is May 23 to November 30. Minimum legth limit on muskellunge is 50". This also includes the Fox River downstream from Winnebago including Little Lake Butte Des Mortes all the way to De Pere.

I don't know what musky club you belong to but the regulations were't written incorrectly. You have misinformation. I verified this with the local warden last year. If you're having a musky outing there, you're going to get ticketed. And if I see anyone muskie fishing out there like I did two weekends ago, you'll get the warden called on you.

Yes, saw someone on LLBDM. One guy was throwing what looked like a Hellhound and the other a WI model Bulldawg....

Just to clear this up I spoke w/ the FDL Co warden on this &...

The LAW states the season opens 1st saturday of may south of HWY 10 (which the winnebago system is). The current regs as printed is a typo (not a law, similar to how the walleye regs are a typo for Winnebago (5+1 sauger instead of 5 total of which 1 may be a suager/saugeye) & that he personally would not write tickets for it.

If you go to page 70 of the online regs it is now updated to read May 2nd as the opener but closes on Nov 30th not Dec 31st like the rest of the southern zone. http://dnr.wi.gov/fish/regulations/2009/documents/fhregs0910.pdf

Hit little green and if the "lakeside" is still open stop in and get a great walleye meal from some really good people....
