Location: North East PA , 20 mins from Chautauqua | I am looking into buying a longer rod for throwing jerk baits this year . I think I can handle that motion change with glidebaits since theres really not of a downward stroke with glides it's more of a handle turn an tap . BUT when I throw chopbaits like Suicks or Leos I have a lot of downward motion ,I almost hit the water with a six and a half foot rod on the downstroke . How do you guys run chops with an eight foot or longer rod ? I'd really like to have the extra lenth for figure eights but I'm not sure I can pull it off ?

Location: Grand Rapids MN | I think you'll be suprised at how much little rod movement it takes to pull these baits with a long rod. What I do is point the rod right at the lure, reel up the slack line from the cast and start pulling down. I stop before the rod even comes close to hitting the water and I get a good sweep on the lure. I am constantly reeling which helps add to the total lure movement. I went from a 6'3" & 7' rod to an 8' and 8'6" in the past few years and really glad I made the change. I used to really have to work and pull to get the action I wanted out of my suicks but the longer rods have made a world of difference.
It may to some getting used to but work at it just a little and I'm sure it will come to ya.

| Lance, I was like you reluctant to change from my old St.Croix Avid 6' Hvy Rods I used for warp speed jerking of Leo's.But I did make the change to the St. Croix Premier 8' XH Rods.I found with the longer 8 ft rod you only had to put about half of the downward motion to get the same Leo Jerk action with the little tail kick. Then there were these other reasons why the 8' rod was better, easier hook set, easier to work fish that hit near the boat around the electric and outboard motors, easier to work the jerkbait, but more important able to do the figure 8 deeper and further away from the boat.It will take a little getting use to,you will add a little more weight in your hands, but there will be less stress on your arms at the end of the day because it will be easier to get the action you want, especialy when doing Leo's at warp speed.

Location: Hayward, WI | Yep, I have been using nothing shorter than 8' rods the last couple years. I think I threw Suicks for a while on my 8'6" too. If you need to get really long sweeps, you can pull down and to the side rather than just straight down. If you do that, you'll be able to pull a bait WAAAYYY farther than you could with a 6'6" rod. You're moving the same amount on the reel/butt end of the rod, but the tip on the longer rod is travelling a lot farther than it would on a short rod. This also means that to get the same pull, YOU don't have to move the butt end as much, making it less work on the wrists/arms.
I wouldn't worry about the jump. It might (maybe) take a little technique change in how you work the baits, but I think you'll be glad you made the switch.

Location: Pelican Rapids, MN | The last couple seasons, I have been using my 8' heavies and 8'6" X-Heavies for Jerks. Like posts before this one, I agree and push clients to use long rods for chop, slash, and glide baits. It seems to make working them a lot easier and a lot less tiresome. The flex in a long rod really add to the swing and prolonged movement of the bait. The shorter rod really confines the action - Not to mention the castability of said lures really improves. | |
