| Anyone fished the Wisconsin River around Rhinelander? It's listed on the DNR website as A1 class musky water. I'm planning a canoe trip for this summer or fall, and I'd appreciate any comments or experiences about fishing the river in this area. Is the river pretty navigable by canoe? I've had really good luck in the Eau Claire river and I'd like to try fishing some other rivers.

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Yes it is, even a bit large in areas. Try floating the Pelican too, right there; my son Keith fishes it in a canoe and he does pretty well. |

Location: Rhinelander, WI | If you’re looking for a good canoe experience, I would avoid the middle part of the Rhinelander Area. Say from the Rhinelander Paper Mill dam up to the Rice. The area where the river channel kisses the edge of Hwy 47. Backwater bar is right in that area, there is a landing off Apperson Drive.
There are lots of power boats and pontoon traffic on the Rhinelander flowage section. It is definitely canoeable and worth fishing, but the experience will not be wilderness.
If I was going to canoe I would put in at the Rainbow dam and go down to Back Waters bar, or even just to the McNaughton bridge. I would then skip the flowage proper and put in below the Rhinelander Paper mill there is a good place to put in near the WDNR office. You can go all the way down to the Hat Rapids Dam and it is a very neat experience. It’s like a different world, don’t know how the fishing will be, but the esthetics are very cool. Also hit the Pelican River as Steve suggested.

Location: north central wisconsin | Yup, Pelican feeds the WI and flows in down below Rhinelander by the DNR station. We run a jon or 14' runabout in the 'float' sections of the WI, so all stretches in the area you specifically mentioned are canoeable, even on low water years(which the past 6-7 have been). Are you talking the Eau Claire river near Eau Claire that alot of people fish, or the one that runs out of Mead Lake? The latter looks to be floatable at times, and was curious if anyone had ever done so.
